Do I want a Biewer??????
 

I have a strange, somewhat coincidental situation.

You know I'm looking for a male.

I have a friend(she was on the gym board with me when I ran a meet for 1200+ special olympics the past 3 years - know her well) who has been a surrogate mother more than once for a family in Germany. She and her children just returned from a 2 month 'holiday' there and were given 2 registered pups - a male and a female (not related to each other) - among many other 'gifts'. These are not dog people, but she didn't want to refuse the gift, and her kids thought they were adorable and played with them before.

So, they are considering keeping the F(but not totally sure yet) and she wanted to know if I wanted the M (they are I think 16 wks old) as she doesn't want him to go to a stranger.

I am very familiar with the genetics of persian cats, but not of yorkies. I know Biewers must genetically be similar to Partis. So, would I want to breed a Biewer with Mia? The pups, I'm sure would be adorable, and Biewers are technically, structurally (for lack of a better term) Yorkies, right? I might also find a F to breed with at some point, but DH said I could get 1 pup, 2 would likely be pushing it.

Any thoughts?

in another thread you said you might breed the male with Mia. I have no experiance, but what will the pups look like from 1 yorkie/1 biewer??

I beleive that you are NOT supposed to breed a yorkie with a Biewer...correct me if I am wrong but I remember hearing that from one of the breeders..I will try and search

My thought on getting this male is no, unless I want to pursue getting a female (or if friend decides she doesn't want her), and then breeding the 2 bierwer.

Just intriguing idea.

RiniW and I know a person who bred her standard female to a German Biewer..she got 4 black/tan females. I would have thought at least two would have been Biewer color or at least some white..NO, nothing!!!

If the genetics are anything like that of cats, that is what I would expect, Biewer + standard would be standard as the 'biewer gene' seems to be a recessive. Most of the pups should carry the recessive gene, tho, like the parti gene carriers. Or this is what I believe given cat genetics.

If the gene is recessive, why when bred to another Biewer..all pups are Biewer colors??
I realize I am showing my ignorance when it comes to genes. If I breed two Yorkies that carry a recessive gene for a bad bite as an example, I may never see a bad bite or only see it in one of 4????

That's the part I don't understand! But, I've read that the white comes from a recessive gene trait. I'd guess that all Biewers carry it, so when the genes are paired, there is always 1 white gene from each parent and thus all true Biewers. I'm not sure, tho. I know that is how it works in cats with similar 'traits'.

The spotting (piebald) gene is recessive. If you breed a phenotype (visible) parti to a visible parti you get parti pups all the way.

Parti to normal will get all normal looking, carrying the parti gene.

Parti to normal looking carrying the parti gene will get a mix of parti looking and normal looking gene carriers.

Also the amount of spotting varies depending on the modifiers. Normally parti should be 50% white but can be more or less. Extreme would just be the head colored and the rest white.

I would check a parti though with too much white on the head to be sure there is no deafness due to lack of pigmentation.

This works the same in parti AKC Yorkies or Biewers.

I have a hard enough time trying to just get the regular coats right. LOL
