Allergy questions? I am about to adopt a 1 yr old female yorkie for $300. The owner is stating she has allergies and they have changed her diet. They think she is allergic to something in their home. (They think their birds). Does that sound logical or am I going to be adopting a dog that could have allergies for the rest of her life? What questions should I ask? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to pass her up as she is the same size and age as my little man Taz. |
Have they said how the allergies affect her? They can take different forms in dogs. Two of mine have allergies. One of my yorkies has Hay Fever, he gets all snuffly & snotty in the spring & summer because of the pollen. One of my Cairns has a food allergy but it's her skin it affects, she gets very greasy dandruff. Neither of them have been at all difficult, or expensive, to control once I found what was causing the problems. With the Cairn, I just needed to change her diet to an anti-allergy kibble. I use James Wellbeloved Lamb & Rice & her skin has been fine once she changed to this. The vet diagnosed my yorkie's Hay Fever. At first he gave him one week's course of cortisoids to take down the worst of the inflammation. Then he gave him Piriton to see if it would control it. Once we found it did, he said just to buy it from the chemist. It costs me £2.79 for 32 pills & he has two doses of 1/8 of a pill twice a day......so a fraction of a penny a day! The worst part is dividing the tiny pills into eighths!:rolleyes: |
I will be talking to her today, so I will get more details. Thank you for your response, my hubby is really concerned that we are going to get a "sick" dog. I told him that most allergies can be controlled. I know we will get her no matter what, but I also wanted a little reassurance!! LOL. |
My Cali scratches all the time. After testing and diet changes we still could not determine what casued her allergies. She scratches all the time. I now have her on a new medicine that has reduced the itching quite a bit. The medicine cost 2.00 a pilll and she takes one a day but her vet said hopefully we can cut her to every other day after a couple of months. I would ask the current owner what testing has been done, any skin scrapings, how has it affected her ie hair loss, skin sores, scratching, if so how much, etc. I think most allergies can be controlled with medicines and many meds are inexpensive or food changes. Also I would ask what food they are feeding her. Hopefully it is the birds she is allergic to and she will do much better at your house. Good luck! |
Allergies are pretty common. Unless this girl has such severe allergies that she's lost her hair, etc., I wouldn't let that stop you from adopting her. She will probably continue to have allergies in your home, but I doubt she will be a "sick" dog. Antihistamines, a change in diet, even adding a fatty acid supplement like 3Vcaps can really help. |
The owner says she scratches her left ear and bites at her paw. They took her to the vet and it was not draining. After several weeks of cleaning they found she had no inner ear infection. They treat her with a wash on her ears and foot two times a week. The vet told them it could be caused by the bird dander or it could be a lifelong condition. Either way we are picking her up tonight. I appreciate everyones responses to this thread. Does anyone else share a similar problem with their dog? |
Yes, besides his Hay Fever, Button scratches at his ears & nibbles his paws because of the allergy. Here we can get a herbal remedy called Thornit that works wonders without any side effects, lots of show people use it. Don't know if you can get it over there but, if you can, it's very good. |
