Hello from a new member! Hi Everyone! I'm a little nervous about posting, I hope this is in the correct forum area.. I've loved Yorkies for some time now, every since my friend got one several years ago, and just recently my wonderful fiance got me one! Actually, it's kind of an interesting story and I was curious if any of you have had experience with the "breeder" that we dealt with. I'd been talking to my fiance for some time about getting a dog, because when I moved in with him, I was unable to take my miniature daushound with me, he lives with my parents and they loved him so much they got another one and there's no way I can seperate them now! So as much as I loved my daushound, I had my heart set on a Yorkie. On Monday of last week, my fiance told me we needed to go to the airport to pick up his boss. We drove there, he went in to "find him" and came out with kennel, with my little yorkie inside! I was so excited! As happy as I was though, I was very concerned with where the little guy came from. I had been researching breeders in our area, and this little guy had been ordered online from Arkansas. We get him home, and he pretty much sleeps the whole day. He refuses to eat. We assume it's stress. So on Tuesday, I took the puppy to the vet. The vet tells me he has kennel cough, an ear infection, an eye infection and a stomach virus. He pumps poor Paxton full of antibiotics, gives me more to give him twice a day. The vet thinks it's okay he's not eating, and just gives me special dog food. That night, after forcefeeding Paxton, he throws it up, so we take him back to the vet. The vet checks him into the hospital and puts him on an IV. He spends two days there, and when we pick him up, the vet assures us he's fine, but he still won't eat. I spent the weekend forcefeeding him. I feel like the puppy hates me now after all the forcefeeding I've been doing to him :( He won't even let me touch his mouth. He sleeps constantly. I actually found this website while doing searches trying to figure out what's wrong with my puppy. I read a whole bunch of threads reading your valuable advice. It made me feel a bit better to know that other people have had issues with their Yorkies and now their Yorkies are thrieving. My fiance has been in contact with the lady we bought him from, telling her everything that's going wrong with him. She suggests we send him back to her, and we can have a new one. My fiance is attached to Paxton and tells her we're going to do what we can to make him better. Monday, I take him back to the vet. The vet tells me he should have gotten better by now from his stomach virus, so something else must be wrong. He x-rays him, and then tells me we'll have to do further tests to see what's wrong with him, because his intestines aren't visible in the xray. At this point, we've already spent a pretty penny on vet bills, so I call my fiance to ask what we should do. He was upset that Paxton's spent so much time at this vet, and the vet STILL doesn't know what's wrong with him. So as soon as he gets home from work, he takes Paxton to a different vet. The new vet (who's praise I will sing for the rest of my life) take a blood sample, something I suggested to the other vet, and he shruged it off. The new vet discovers that Paxton's white blood cell count is in the high 50's, when it should be 5-15. They investigate further and find a parasite living in him. They tell us he would have died that night if my fiance hadn't brought him in. Unfortantly, treatment for him cost $1,400. My fiance paid it right away. I've never loved my fiance more :) They call the other vet to get records, and the other vet says "I didn't think he was that sick". My fiance calls the lady we bought him from, and tells her everything that happens. She suggests again sending him back and she'll send a new one, but the vet says sending him back would condemn him to death, he'd never be able to handle the stress of it. Plus we love our little puppy. She then just says, "Sorry to hear it, but it's not my problem." We a pretty upset with this breeder, since she sold us an unhealthy puppy that would have died had she not sold it to us. I'm not sure if what she did was illegal or not, but in the contract she sent with him, she covered her tracks pretty well, which leads me to believe she's sold unhealthy puppies before. I'm thinking she's a puppy mill breeder, which my fiance didn't know anything about before he got the puppy (He's trusting). I know it's not about the money, but I feel like the lady owes us something, since she caused us such heartache, and she shouldn't have sold a dying puppy. Does anyone know if there's organizations that I can complain to about this unethical behavior? The puppy is AKC registered, is it possible I complain to them about it? So now Paxton's been at the new vet for the past two days, he's eating on his own now, and being playful. I'm so excited to see my puppy soon, I haven't gotten enough time to see him since I got him! It's been pretty heartbreaking to watch a puppy that should be full of life barely have the energy to stand up, and be unable to eat. I hope this wasn't too much of a novel, and I'd love to hear any thoughts! I'm happy to be around a group of yorkie lovers! |
Wow, first I want to welcome you to Yorkietalk, and I'm sure the others will have suggestions too, but I think it's just great that you decided to take him to a different vet. You are right, he probably would have died if you sent him back. Some breeders think these dogs are disposable, and so what if one dies, it's not worth the money to try to save them. Your pet does sound like he came from a puppy mill or back yard breeder, and this is the way they work, "send the puppy back, we don't pay vet bill". I have seen cases on TV court, where people took the breeders to a small claims court and won for vet bills. I can think of several things you could do. We have a breeder review section, just cut and paste the thread you posted and include the Kennel or breeder name, as this will help others. I would also inform the AKC as they do kennel checks, they may not be able to get you any money, but she might lose her license. Some people also report to Better Business Bureau, and they try to resolve these matters. There is an on-line chapter. I also would make a complaint about the vet to the appropriate authorities; he really should have done a blood test. There is no excuse for that. Wow, poor little Paxton :( I don;t know the route of reporting your breeder, but you could always go to the review section of YT and post your story there about Paxton. Make sure to put in her name and her website so others can see who your talking about. Since she said "it wasn't her problem" I wouldn't give a second thought to putting her name in the public spotlight for others to be warned of her and how her program runs, and especially that she sells SICK puppies!! You know, look at it like this. How many other pups were around Paxton at the breeders???? How many other people are getting these sick puppies and don't know it? I personally would at this point want to make sure people are aware of hername, website, town, things like that. She didn't give you guys a second thought on your poor sick Paxton, don't give her one. You could save another puppies life by doing it. The internet works in weird ways, you never know what just might come back and bite you ;) which it sounds that she could use a little "bite" or a BIG bite" if it were me. Sorry this got so long, but it just upsets me so much to see these kind of "so called breeders, puppy millers" just shipping out sick and dying puppies without a second thought besides their full pocket :( Well on to a better note :) I can't wait to see pics of PAxton when he comes home from the Vet. Poor baby, he is going to need some super duper extra lovin's when he gets home from his new Mommy & Daddy. I sense Daddy has taken a great liking to him?!?! ;) MY DH was like that too. It doesn't take long for these little furbutts to win over a big strong mans heart :) lol! :) I can't wait to see pics!! P&PT going out for Paxton :) |
welcome to YT...hopefully someone can help you! |
Welcome to YT. I am so sorry you have had to deal with such an unethical breeder! I am glad, though, that little Paxton has you and your fiance for his loving "parents". Without the care you two have given him, he surely would have died! God bless you both!!! |
Welcome!!!! :wavey:Welcome to YT, Paxton, Mommy & fiance!!!:wavey: Silly me was to busy being mad at your :thumbdown"breeder":thumbdown and forgot to welcome you:eek:, sorry:D, lol! :yorkietal |
:aimeeyork My gosh  I am so sorry all of that happened to your little puppy. WEcome to YT, though, and I am sure you will find support here! :aimeeyork Your little guy is very lucky to have found you guys, he would have not survived. :( The parasite was killing him. Was it Hookworm? I sure hope the worst is over for him and he will lead a healthy life now! :D |
Just wanted to say welcome to YT and hoping you'll get lots of good advice here. |

This person needs to be exposed of what she has done and probably does to others on a regular basis with these poor sick babies :( |
Sounds like you're getting the best advice. Welcome to YT! :) |
i am new here to this is a great site every one is so helpful welcome cindy:yorkietal runt:aimeeyork |
Thank you all for the welcome! I posted in the reviews section, now I have to wait for it to be approved before you get to see my claws out! Daddy loves little Paxton, it's really cute since he's a manly man, and he cuddles up with the little toy dog. He was actually talking to both his workout buddies and friends at the Mustang Auto Shop he goes to about his little yorkie! I'm not sure what parasite he has, but I'll ask when I talk to the vet in the morning. I'll be posting pictures of him when he gets home as well! |
ooops |
i put the cause in your other thread, but the cause was coccidiosis. |

here is what i posted in the other thread, but it seems it won't show until it gets approved. howdy all. i'm the unfortunate buyer of this puppy. i need to correct a couple of things my fiance has posted. that other vet (all pets in Chantilly, VA if anybody lives around the area) was the vet that had the pup for 5 days (2 over night) and could not tell me what was wrong with it. The rate they were going, they were completely off base, as the other vet i went to had him diagnosed in 30 minutes. all pets actually offered my fiance a credit card application to keep the pup there to pay for the tests and future tests. the granny puppies place did NOT offer me another puppy. she told me it was not her fault but i could send him back and get just the money from the pup, minus the shipping cost. that would have been the end of it. the vet told me if i had put that puppy on the plane, he would not have made it there alive, so i just put the money up to get him well again. i spoke with the vet and the pup had coccidiosis, anemia, dehydration & kennel cough. he's doing much better now. he is on a bunch of medication at the moment, so he is still not very active. he's a lot more vocal now, before he wouldn't even make a sound. now he yaps when we put him in his kennel for the night or while i go take a shower or something. he quiets down when he realizes i'm not letting him out though. he'll follow my fiance or i around like a lost puppy if we're doing things around the house. he's still a bit clumsy and falls down a lot. he still sleeps a lot and prefers to sleep next to you and not in the kennel. i'm guessing because of all of the meds he's on. he's eating now and lets you know when he's hungry. he's going back for a check up this coming week to see how he is doing. needless to say... i've learned my lesson when buying a pup. i should have actually read the so-called "warranty" more closely. she could have sent me a puppy that has not eaten in weeks and died of starvation en route and not have been responsible for it. what a joke. since i last spoke with her, she has not answered my calls or returned my calls. at least i saved a yorkie who wasn't even going to have a chance at life had i not gotten him. |
Ok, I'm confused  - who does this little guy belong to PtVintage or almighty peanut?? I'm going to say welcome to YT! I am so sorry for all you have been thru. Wow, what a horrid set of things you have learned about in such a short time. This little Paxton will be forever grateful for all you have done to save his life. Is this horrid breeder's business called Granny Puppies ?? Oh, my I just looked at that website - - mixed breeds, multiple breeds, lots of scary stuff there |
Welcome to YT! Prayers going out to Paxton! |
:yorkietal Welcome Paxton, PtVintage & almighty-peanut :yorkietal Welcome to Yorkietalk. After reading both of your posts, I am so very sorry that you had this horrid experience. PtVintage - to sounds like you have a "keeper" in your almighty_peanut. What a wonderful guy to look for and find a Yorkie for you all on his own and to surprise you. The thought of it all makes me weepy. Oh to be so young and in love !!!!! I am very very sorry for the terrible condition of the pup. It breaks my heart to hear of poor sick pups being shipped across the country. It sounds like this second vet you have has your little Paxon on the right track. PtVintage, please don't worry about the pup "hating" you. Once you get him through the sickness he will forget the force feeding and all the "evil" you are doing to make him well. Congratulations! Can't wait to see pics of a HEALTHY Paxon and to hear all about him! |

Just trying to understand ;) |
Welcome to both of you! :) These little guys really take over your heart don't they? My husband is reading over my shoulder most of the time. I really think he should get his own username. Do you have a name for the parasite yet? If you do, you should consider reporting her to the humane society or animal control in her area. With a specific illness it will be easier to get their attention. Reporting to AKC would be a good idea as well, but I'm not sure what penalties if anything they have for sick animals. I think they just worry about the record keeping. But unfortunately, you're most likely not going to see any money from this lady. That's why the contract is written the way it is. Most people would never send their sick pup back for a new one. Puppies are not like items from Walmart. Sad as it is, she's most likely a puppy mill or a puppy broker. Greeder is a better term than breeder. :thumbdown |

this is what the puppy had. coccidiosis anemia dehydration kennel cough the puppy had coccidiosis from the day we got him, so he did not get it when he got here. i did some research and it seems to be pretty common in pups when going to a new home, but not til after a couple weeks. so he definitely got it from where i got him. trust me... we're going to report the lady to the AKC. i looked on the bbb and she isn't even listed on there. |
Quote:
Can't you report a business that isn't listed? |
Yes! That's the point of the BBB. The main problem is that they COULD be listed already as a weird name. You need to search it several different way. Animal breeders, farm, ranch, etc.. She could not actually be the owner of record, etc.. Sometimes it's tough to track it down. |
yoour puppy is very lucky .I am glad he is in a safe, and loving home. He could have passed away easily with all that he had .Poor Paxton:( I think he will be just fine after he is treated and feeling better. The anemia was a result of the parasite. :( Tiny pups do not have a lot to lose, and when they get parasites it sucks the life out of them.:aimeeyork Can one of you post pictures of Paxton? :aimeeyork |
Hi there! Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am so sorry to hear about your baby but glad he is getting better. I am disheartened that you got him from my state, although not surprised because there are some puppy mills here. One of the worst puppy mills is not far from me in Missouri...a place called Hunte. It just hurts my heart to think about it. They have big billboards on the highway advertising their puppies...I just cringe everytime I see them. I think you can chalk it up to lesson learned, and let's hope the baby recovers fully and you guys can really start to enjoy him! |
Welcome! I'm new too and I'm sooo sorry to hear about your experience. |
Hi and welcome to YT! :welcome4: Poor little Paxton. Bless your heart for helping this little baby. I was the same way with my middle yorkie (Maya) when I found out she had a liver shunt. The breeder (a local breeder) said "bring her back and I'll give you a new one". By that time we had spent thousands of dollars on her care and were so attached to her. You must get the word out and publish the breeder's name so others don't purchase a sick puppy from them. This breeder has no heart for selling sick puppies.........no heart for the health and wellbeing of these helpless little creatures. I'm so glad little Paxton is feeling better and is eating and playing. Hopefully he will get to come home with you soon. Hugs to you! |
Best wishes for Paxton! What an incredible story. I don't know how your boyfriend found this breeder but it does not sound at all good. How much did he research this breeder or even ask her for testimonials from other puppy buyers? I hope and believe that your little puppy will get better. I would not send him back at all, you have put so much money in him and love him so. I would consider taking this wowman to small claims court and keep documentation of everything right down to dates and times of phone calls, all bills etc that you have ensued. I have two little bichon frise sisters that I got from a breeder in NC seven years ago. I researched him so much and felt so good about him. He has been breeding small breed dogs for 30 years, is a member of the better business bureau and has excellent testimonials and references. When I decided to get a yorkie puppy I knew I would go back to him. I just picked up my female Dixie two weeks ago. My 19 yr old twin daughters also purchased a male puppy Teddy who is two weeks younger and from a different litter. Besides thier papers he gives a two year health warranty and you are required to take them to your vet within 48 hours of getting them to put that warranty into effect. I did and they are in excellent health and thriving and wonderfully playful. I would recommend him highly if you are ever intrested. Where are you in Virginia? I am just outside of Manassas, in Prince William County. We are hoping thru this site to find more people who have yorkies in our immediate area. Maybe we can start a yorkie play group or something. Good Luck to you and your boyfriend and your little puppy. Keep us informed about what you decide to do about the breeder. I think she should certainly offer to reimburse you for some of your expense and also I think she should have seen the health problems before even flying this puppy to you. I would fight it! Good Luck!;) |
