Pups Died My sister called to tell me that two of her 7 week old puppies have died. They were eating (nursing and kibble) and playing, not pooping, vomiting, coughing or seeming ill. I saw them last week and they were fine. One little boy died Monday night and another one last night. She is very upset and can't figure out what is wrong. Her first guess was hypoglysemia, but with no ill signs, how can she tell? Any ideas? |
Could it be parvo? Maybe not if they were eating and drinking ok. |

First of all, I am very sorry for your sisters loss. I do not know anything about this as I am new to owning a Yorkie, but wanted to give my sympathies. |
I am sorry to hear this.. I would have suggested she have a post mortem done.. I lost three boys this litter, one day 6 one day 7 and one day 20, again no reason.. had a post mortem done and they could not find a reason for the little boy on day 20, at 2 a.m he was ok, and by 8 a.m he was gone..other then his stomach being empty they could find nothing else.. but said he had lots of fat and was not dehydrated and told me his belly could empty in 2-3 hours.. It was not my first litter and I had never had anything like this happen to me.. it is so very hard to go through this.. my heart goes out to her.. it sure depressed me some..our little girl is now 6 weeks old and I worry every day.. some say I should begin to relax.. then I see a thread like yours and know I need to be so vigilant still.... anne |
I'm so sorry. |
How many puppies were there altogether? she needs to find out what happened to prevent it happening to the others..I'm so sorry this happened.:( |
There's not enough info in your post to offer an opinion. I would take the remaining pups to a vet and get them checked. Having 2 pups die so close together would make me think it could be something contagious. If she's at a loss as to the cause, she really needs to get the surviving pups to a vet ASAP. They go downhill very fast. |
I'm so sorry for the loss and sure hope they can get some answers. My thoughts are with them. |
Yes, definately time for the vet with the remaining pups...so sorry for her loss. |
There were 5 pups in the litter. She did take the last 3 to her vet yesterday and they are fine. We can't carry them in our pockets 24/7. I'm supposed to get one of the little girls and I'm sure worried about her. We think she's a parti, with spots on her feet, nose, and chest. A friend of mine had the same thing happen with pugs last year. She lost the whole litter of 7 pups. Her vet couldn't figure it out. Hypothetical - can heartworms be passed from parent to pup? My sister doesn't give her doggies HW meds. |
HW The mother can pass the larva to the puppies, but they do not develop into adult worms..BUT the pups will be carriers and in that case it can be dangerous to start them on heartworm prevention..make sure they are tested before giving meds... It would be much simpler to have the mother tested...if she is negative, then there is no worry..if she is positive, then there can be a problem. |
