Normal vet behavior?? I took Bella to the vet last evening for her rabies and distemper shots...Well, the vet tech came out to get her and told me I didn't need to come in - it would only take a few minutes. Now, granted, this wasn't a vet visit, just a tech appt. to give her her shots, but still... Should I have insisted on going in with her? Is this normal?? Should I have stood my ground and insisted on going in with her?? Thanks in advance! Monica |
AT my vet if I have an appointment for heart worm or blood draw they will say to you want to see a vet or can a tech do it, If I opt for a tech, we do not see a vet and there is no office visit charge. So maybe that's how it is at your vet too. |
I've never heard of that before...but maybe they are thinking that your baby would have acted better without you there? I know Lexie is better behaved if I'm not in the room for me...she will try to crawl up my shirt...ha ha ha. |
That is normal. If you aren't scheduled to see a vet, the tech just takes the animal in the back. Just make sure they know EXACTLY what they are supposed to be doing with your dog because some techs (and even some vets) aren't really "there" and may not be paying attention to what they are supposed to be doing. Make sure you go over exactly what vaccines should be given... If you are paying for a vet visit, you should always go into the room with Bella (for regularly scheduled appts., not necessarily emergencies). Sometimes the vet has a hard time restraining or they are about to do a procedure (like a blood draw) and they may want to take her in the back. That is fine IF you trust them. |
This is new to me. Anytime I take my furbutts to the vet I always see Dr. Amy. I am not familiar with the training requirements of a vet tech. Is there an official training program for vet techs and do they have to a state exam? Until I know the answers to those questions, I will gladly pay the office visit fee and have my kids taken care of by my trusted and loved Dr. Amy. I have never seen Vet Tech certificates hanging on the walls next to the Vet's Diplomas and certificates. |

Yes my vet does this but I only allow the vet to give shots to my babies |
I've never had this happen to me, but I guess it goes with the vet's office system, not all of them work the same.I always go in, for shots, regular visits, blood tests, they don't even ask if you want to come in, they send you in with your baby. |

Thank you so very much for the explaination. I agree. 2 years is not enough training to entrust the life of my dogs. Even when my guys go in for annual vaccinations, they get a thorough checkup. I hope that I don't offend any of our vet techs that are members here, but I will gladly pay a office visit each time to see Dr. Amy. Not only is it on record, but I discuss it with Dr. amy every time they go in for surgery -- ONLY the vet is to entubate and do the actual procedures. I have no problem with the vet tech "assisting" or watching, but under no circumstances do I give my approval for a tech to do the actual procedure. |
Thank you all for replying! I feel better now. I know I always go in with my cat, and my husband always goes in with our pit bull/boxer - but then again, the cat always FREAKS (I'm talking 2 muzzles needed!) and the pit bull is huge, strong and uncouth (my husbands doing :))....so I wasn't sure. I'm just so protective over my tiny baby! |
We always see our vet and the tech is there to assist. |

if we are "just getting" vaccines, then the vet tech will actually come out to the waiting room and give our pups the shots there! we don't see the vet and we aren't charged a office fee. again this is for SHOTS only. |

always ask your vet for the safe green vaccine with no preservatives i will always give my own... available online in ohio vet techs are great doctors are busy and will delegate.. lots of emergecy and scheduled surgeries come up canine neuter for louie was only $175 with teeth pulled:) |
I thought the question related to taking the animal from the room and not that the tech gave the shots. She already knew this was the case because the appointment was made with the tech. I think techs are very capable of giving shots. The question about taking him out of the room yes my vet does this too, occasionally, I think the animals are more calm if not in your presence. We always have toenails clipped at office visits, and he takes Joey to a different room for this procedure as well. |
