Question on Parvo My dtr's best friends family adopted an 8 week old lab mix from a shelter Friday and she is now in the er with Parvo. So please keep her in your prayers. My dtr spent the night there Saturday and played with the puppy, my question is are my dogs at any risk for catching it? Could my dtr have brought the virus into my house? All my babies are up to date on their shots. Thanks |
Parvo lives on surfaces. I'd highly recommend bleaching the soles of whatever footwear she wore...and cleaning anything she'd taken with her. I don't know if it's possible to transmit from her hands because I'm not certain the virus can survive there. I think I'd call the vet's office and ask what they recommended as whether further disinfecting the house is necessary. I'm sorry their new puppy is sick and hope they caught it in time. |
Thanks and wouldn't you know I found one of the sandals my dtr wore to her friends on her bed when I came home today which means either Pixie or Roxie brought it up there. Of course I had told my dtr not to leave these sandals where the dogs could get them because they had a guess charm on them and I was afraid one of them would eat it, but she didn't listen. I will call my vet tomorrow. |
Chachi...I just looked this up. I was pretty certain the virus was shed in the dog's feces.... Parvo FAQs |
Thanks hopefully since mine are all vaccinated and it is transmitted in feces and my dtr didn't step in any they will be ok. I will call my vet in the morning just for peace of mind. |

Not that this applies in your case....but even vaccinated dogs can get parvo if exposed to contaminated soil. A friend of mine purchased a home...and his dogs both came down with parvo from the yard. One was sicker than the other, but they both survived. Several of our dog parks here have closed in recent months due to parvo outbreaks traced back to the soil. The only requirement to use the park is proof of rabies. The closings plus knowing what happened to a friend of mine...has kept me from ever taking mine to any dog park. |
