SLEEP question My pup is 11 weeks old. During the night she will wake up and pace around needing to use the restroom at 4:00am and then again at about 6:30am (going to bed around 10pm) Any advice on how to get her to start sleeping more through the night? Is this just a puppy thing that she will grow out of or do I need to start doing something different to get her to last through the night. <She sleeps with me> :aimeeyork |
My puppy is 10 weeks old and she only wakes me up once around 230, then goes till around 7 or 8 when we are going to bed between 11-1230 each night. Make sure to always put your puppy's water up a few hours before bedtime, that's what I do and it works pretty well. I put hers up around 8 every night, so by the end of the night her bladder is freshly empty :). |
I dont think its a good idea to pick up the water at 8... like humans they get thristy... and being so small they can get dehydrated. I know I would hate it if I was thirsty at 8 pm and couldnt get a sip of water for 12 hours :( Waking up at night should just be a puppy thing... By 5 months my dog was sleeping through the night without a problem. They will learn to hold it longer and longer. Especially at such a young age i would rather have her wake me up an extra time than be thristy all night.... |
I learned to do that awhile ago, I heard it through the grapevine. I could easily be wrong, if she goes looking for her water bowl I let her have a few sips, but that is typically not the case. She is still producing plenty of pee to go potty at 230am and again at 7/8 (at which time i put down her food and water)...so for her it has been fine. Just think about us sleeping through the night without drinking, we don't get dehydrated, she still has plenty of water in her system to last her throughout the night without drinking. Now if she isn't drinking enough during the day then I wouldn't suggest this. Then again, I am not a vet! This is just what works for me :) So I was just letting Leanne know my tip...I notice a pattern...example, last night i forgot to put up her water and she drank until 1030, she woke me up 3 times last night to potty, which of course I don't mind letting her out!, but it is a pattern, whereas if I put it up earlier around 8 or 9 she doesnt wake me up as much. |
Bella wakes up to go potty in the middle of the night, but uses her pee pad without problems (except for hitting the edge on occasion) I leave water out for her and she goes to it whenever she wants. |

Laurn, you're right, we do spend the whole night for the most part without water but sometimes before I go to bed I like to get a drink if my mouth is dry... I also dont think that I spend 12 hours without water. Its usually less than that. I would just hate to think that my baby was thirsty and not have any water available for her. |
Maybe try having her sleep in a crate so that she learns to sleep through the night. That's what I do and my baby learned to sleep all night. Annnd she actually loves her crate bc it is a comfy cozy and it is her "safe" spot. We actually call it her "bedroom" not crate. |
