Yorkies good with cats? I read on a few sites that its not a good idea to leave a yorkie or terrier in general around a cat and I was wondering if there's anyone here that owns a cat as well as a yorkie and do they get along? I have two 2 year old cats and I don't want any problems =[. |
1 Attachment(s) Welcome to YT! I had 2 Siamese cats when I brought my 2 yorkies home. My male Siamese, who has since passed was so easy going and would often be found sleeping with my yorkies. My female Siamese is sometimes jealous of the dogs, but really everyone gets along. Here's a picture of my yorkies during a gift exchange (something fun we do on YT 4-times a yr) - I was showing pictures of Roxy's gifts and my 16 year old female Siamese decided she had to be a part of the show  |
Depends on what you mean by "good with cats". Mine keeps our cat treed in the closet most of the time. She does get a little help from one of my wife's Maltese. :D |
Lol by good i mean the yorkie won't use my cats as chew toys xD. Yorkiesmiles, your yorkies and your siamese cat are so cute and i'm sorry about your male cat :(. Both of my cats are girls and one is sort of mean and the other is nice most of the time. I think the nice one would get along with a dog but the other might try to claw it's eyes out x_x; |
Well, it sounds like your cats could fend off the yorkies. If your cats have all their claws you would have to watch for any rough play early on. I have heard of cats damaging a dogs eye before. But for the most part I have found that different animals learn to respect each others space for the most part. But once in awhile I do see my Siamese get ready to pounce on a yorkie  - never the other way around. |
I have four cats ranging in age from 3 yrs to 16 years. They all get along well with the Yorkies as long as they have their escape route if play gets too rough! My Yorkie girls love to play with the kitties. The boy kitties don't mind so much. The girl kitties give them that look and the continue their naps high up somewhere! |
Well thanks a bunch you guys ^^, hopefully if I choose a yorkie there wont be too many problems. Now to find a good breeder x_x . And thanks for the welcome yorkiesmiles, i forgot to thank you in my first reply :D |
My cousins' cat Maggie rules the roost at her house. She has 3 rat terrier brother and sisters and they are all terrified of her. They will literally run the other direction if they see Maggie. On the other hand, Bella will run up to Maggie and keep patting at her until Maggie either slaps her away or nips at her. The first time it happened I about had a heart attack, but Bella waas fine. She waited a few hours and then went back for seconds and nipped at Maggie's tail. Maggie just gave Bella a look of "hullo, I will hurt you". But they just kinda co-exist. But Maggie is a super great Calico cat. She's more like a dog in some ways. Bella has picked up the way Maggie bats at things with her pawas and she acts like a cat now. So I say it just depends on the dog and the cat. :animal36 |
I have two older (cranky) cats and they all get along great! They just jump up on the couch or the bed if they don't want to deal with Lucy but she loves them, always licking their foreheads so they are in heaven :) |
Lol I hope my cats and new dog get along that well :p and thanks for your input guys, it really helped me out ^_^ |
I have a little 8 month old yorkie named Token. It is safe for me to say that his favorite thing to do is chase around my boyfriend's 11 year old cat, Rascal. Rascal and Token do NOT get along, but maybe that is because Token tortures Rascal. I dunno.:animal-pa |
1 Attachment(s) My Yorkies love the cats, but they also love to chase them. :) Attachment 227561 this is Lexie with her kitty, he was from a stray that ran in my house after a storm and had her kittens under my bed, and Lexie took over:p |
3 Attachment(s) I have a 9 1/2 year old female cat and a 17 wk old male yorkie... it has taken some getting used to. Buffalo (yorkie) gets hyper sometimes and runs around and Tigerlilly (cat) watches crouched under the desk and if he gets too close she will chase after him. but they have been getting along, tigerlilly never uses her claws on him and only bites softly to show she is the boss. I would say overall they are growing on eachother. Tigerlilly even lets Buff clean her on occasion... he loves her ears lol. Hah! If it weren't for Rocky poor Rambeau would have no one to play with. They love to wrestle and box. There is a great video of them on Michael Ayers' Digital Images- powered by SmugMug under Rambeau. Which reminds me, I have a question about breeders, puppy mills back yard breeder but I am going to post it under "playmate for Rambeau". My extremely senior persian female has no time for him, even though he tackles her every chance he gets. She (17 years old) hates him!!! Melissa and Rambeau (I love the fluffy kitty, she's soft to land on!) |
Oh my gosh, you guys are making me so jealous lol. I can't wait to get a puppy now =[. Btw, have any of you heard of sportsman kennels in long island new york? |
I have 3 large cats but Piper never had a problem with them and now our little 2+ lb. Phoebe chases the largest, my lilac persian, Lyric, around the house every chance she gets...so funny to see! Good luck getting your new furbaby...they should all do well. |
We have 2 yorkies, 1 cat, and a chinchilla. My dogs get along with the cat fairly well. Sometimes they like to chase each other and play and sometimes they get annoyed and I have to stop them. But, they have never been in a fight or anything, the dogs usually just stick together and the cat does her own thing. |
1 Attachment(s) Sairis Hello, I've never had any problems, look Attachment 227719 she always waits until the beautiful cat aufgefressen, then the teller leergeleckt |
I have a year old Himalayan cat and she and my yorkie get along just fine. They often chase each other and love laying together sometimes. :) |
I have a 6 year old Main coon and he out weighs Fergie by over 10 pounds...they get along great...The cat gets stalked by Fergie daily and they love to chase each other. We enjoy watching them play. |
We have two new yorkie babies, Dixie who is 11 weeks today and Teddy who is 9 weeks today. We also have two other dogs, 8 yr old Bichons and 8 cats. Our cats do great with them. They are all declawed and spayed/neutered so they don't have much in the way of defense anyway. (They all stay inside) Teddy loves one of our black cats, Evie, she will come right up to the baby pen and Teddy will come over and just lick and lick and lick her!! They haven't been around the Bichons much yet. When I put Teddy down the other day near them to sniff him, one of the Bichons bit him. I was standing right there and quickly scooped him away, but that just lets me know that they won't be coming around until the puppies are a little bit older!! |
i just got a siamese kitten about 3 weeks ago.. he's 9 weeks old now. at first Bell (who is a year and a half) was a little skeptical about the new arrival. she growled a little. now, they have gotten used to each other and are really good friends, the cat chases and plays as if he was a dog!! they are great together. |
1 Attachment(s) My older cat, Casper, who is 14 isn't my yorkie's biggest fan. He will swat at her sometimes if she's getting on his nerves but mostly just stays away from her. My other cat, Mr. Luci, who is 2, loves the puppy and they play all the time. |
We had 2 cats (one recently passed away). The cat that just passed away hated the dogs and would always hiss. They ignored her and just kinda looked at her like "what's your problem?!" The other one is still a baby and loves to play. Chip and him do really, really well together. Smokey does good with him, he just doesn't understand that he has to play a little more gentle with him. |
I am watching someones cat for a month. GiGi is great with him. EXCEPT for the fact He is alot bigger than her and thinks she is a toy. He is stalking her, then he will jump out of nowhere and scare her. I think she is going to have a heart attack!! You should see her always checking behind her now!!! |
My 13 pound cat out weighs both my Yorkies together! Try my smallest can take him on! Living with my hubby there has to be a cat around! Lol if it weren't for me he would have dozens. |
Ah, that's the thing. I don't want the dog to chase them around or anything lol, things might get ugly =/. Btw you all have such beautiful babies :o. |
Captain Jack loves our cat. He thinks he is the coolest chew toy ever. He tastes great and makes the best noise when he bites him!:D |
