Traveling with my Yorkie Hello everyone, I am Rusty's mom, he is a 7 pound yorkie and is now one and a half years old. I am planning a four hour trip by bus and don't want to leave Rusty home. Rusty is very restless and hates to be in cars. Now my vet gave me a sedative which is suppose to calm him down for about four hours. I would like to know if anyone here has used any sedatives and what their experiences were. What I am most concerned with is he's behaviour during the trip. I would really hate to be an annoyance to the other passengers. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. |
Maybe you could start training him to feel comfortable in a vehicle. Take him for little road trips each day and make it a super positive experience for him. Bring treats and use positive reinforcement. Start increasing the amount of drive time each time and he will do better and better each time. Also, it would be a good idea to wear him out before getting on the bus so that he doesn't have too much energy during the ride. I have not used sedatives to take my dogs on road trips. They usually sleep once we get on the interstate. When my yorkie was younger, he had a lot of anxiety associated with getting in the car, but I did what I described above, and he adjusted very well. He has no problems riding in a car now. |
Thank you yourkieluv. Now the problem is I don't drive because I live in NYC and my trip is in a couple of days. I am hoping the sedative does work, I really want him to be comfortable all through out the trip and that I don't have passengers complaining about a barking dog. What I will do is try to ware him out like you mentioned, yes, that's a very good idea. Thank you again for your reply. |
I would say make sure you take him for a long walk and tire him out before the drive and then he wil be fine. Go for an hour long walk or longer and then he should be good for the ride. |
Mia doesn't like car rides at all. She will pant the entire time, so we just went on vacation and took her with us and my vet gave me a sedative and it works really good. Make sure you give what the vet prescribed,(not a bit more) because it does make them drowsy. Mine did very good and wore off in about 4 hours. We gave it to her when we left and when we came back. She was still awake enough that when we stopped for a pee break, she did go. Just make sure you keep a close eye on your baby, because there is no way she could defend herself against anyone or any animal. Hope this helps you.. It deffinatley will keep the stress level down on both of you during the ride.:aimeeyork |
