New Puppy Owner Questions! So I have a baby girl yorkie who is about 10 wks old. She is already crate trained and her mid-night wakeups to potty have decreased (obviously) since I first got her. My question is...is there ever a time I am supposed to make her hold it through the night? or is that something she will do on her own and she'll stop waking me up to let her out? Also! How long should it take for her to get used to her collar? It has been on for 3 weeks straight 24/7 and it is one of those teeny nylon ones...I have tried harnesses and she hates those also, just scratches away at them. Any suggestions?? Thanks! When time comes , she will hold it on her own . Never let a collar on her when she is unattended because accidents can happen . You do not have to let the collar or harness 24/7 on her . |

Your puppy is still very young. I would not make her hold it through the night any time soon. When she can hold it through the night, she will do that on her own. Collars are very dangerous...Look through some old threads and you will see several accidents that have happened with collars. Everything from getting the collars stuck in their mouths because they tried to get out of it causing injuries around the mouth to a yorkie accidentally hanging himself by jumping and getting the collar stuck on something. Aside from accidents that can happen, walking a yorkie with a leash attached to the collar is also dangerous. Yorkies are very susceptible to collapsing trachea and should not have any pressure around their neck/throat area. |
I was determined that Maybelline would wear a collar and she dug and dug at it and would look like a little cripple puppy trying to dig at while walking around. She finally got use to it after several weeks. I also wanted to be able to hear where she was in the house, but after all that I hardly have her use it because believe my I know where she is I can hear her toe nails on the wood and ceramic so she can not sneak around. I also quit using it because her hair would lay akwardly over it and being a little OCD I wanted it to lay straight. I do use a harness if we go for a walk |
we attach a bell to his bow or harness I always worry about him getting stepped on to thus the bell has always ben a part of the harness( before he had enough hair )or his rubber band. If he has to go potty in the middle of the night he jumps off the bed and goes to potty pad in bathroom of course he still wakes me up to help him bk on the bed lol |
But how do you assure her ID if she (god forbid) gets lost or runs away?? I feel like a collar is necessary for a name tag to hang. Suggestions? I am getting her microchipped at her next vet appointment but still...I have never owned a dog of this size before so am accustomed to the nametag reassurance. Even though it might be a false sense of security, and even though she is rarely out of my sight haha. |

I did use a collar on Bella when she first got home with a few bells attached. Then I read on here about the dangers of just using a collar in a house so I just put the bells on her harness. I never let her outside without my being there so I can always keep an eye out for her and she will be micro-chipped when she gets spayed in a few months. You can always just attach the tags to a harness and only put the harness on when you take her out for walks or when you take her somewhere. |
