How do I rescue? Ok so Chewy turned 2 this year.. I really want another dog but this is a very bad time for me financially. I am hoping to be able to adopt a rescue next summer. now I have always heard that the process of finding the perfect dog and being approved to take it home could be a leangthy process... Im wondering how this works? How do you find a shelter... I would need it to be in the NYC area.. maybe the ASPCA in manhattan. I am also very particular about it being a girl and at least 7 pounds. Chewy is really hyper and I wouldnt want to have a shy tiny baby that I would have to worry about. I think Chewy would take advantage of her. shes very aggressive at 7.5 lbs. I would also really like for them to be close in age... waybe up to 3 years old...? But thats not too important. So any advice you guys can give on how to start this process would be greatly appreciated. Do my requirements sound realistic for next summer? Ideally I would like to take a week off from work over Memorial day weekend and have a dog to bring home that week. |
Here is a website for yorkie rescues...you just type in your zip code and click on the go fetch button. and it will show all of the available yorkies needing to be adopted in your area. Not sure how the process works exactly but I hope the site helps!!! Yorkie Rescue and Adoption- Adopt a Yorkshire Terrier Near You |
Oooo Thats a great Site !!! Thanks so much! There's only one yorkie within 50 miles from me though in the young category... so ill have to keep looking. Thanks |
The young, adoptable dogs go very quickly, usually to people to have already submitted an adoption application and been approved. Your best bet is to go to Petfinder and find Yorkie rescues that adopt in your area. Then fill out an application so you will be considered when the perfect match comes into rescue: Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. Just my two cents.... Financial constraints are not a good reason to turn to rescue. Adding a second dog is a big financial commitment no matter how you get it. Also, since rescues have unknown backgrounds, you may face vet bills or expenses for trainers to deal with "baggage" a dog may come with. I adopted Lady nine years ago this month. She is my heart dog, my soul "malt", but her vet bills have always been outrageous. Please make sure you are making the decision to rescue for the right reasons. If you do, I promise you will never regret it! |
I guess I was unclear about my financial contraints... I do have a job and know the vet bills... I'm a regular at my vets office... but I have been saving every penny I could possible save lately to put down a downpayment on my new apt! im finally in the process of buying and cannot afford to take out any money from my accnt... for financing reasons. Im not looking for a rescue because its cheaper... I feel like I rescued Chewy from the aweful cage she was confined to in the pet store 2 years ago... I think I have spoiled her more than i ever thought was possible with a dog and I probably spend just as much money on her as I do on myself. Im mainly looking into rescuing because ive seen so many people here save the lives of these inocent babies who dont deserve the conditions they are in. If I would have known about YT before I got Chewy, I would have rescued then as well... but you live and you learn. Also, i like the idea of getting a puppy that isnt 8 weeks old... I want to be able to estimate the adult weight so the new puppy is similar to or larger than Chewy. She is CRAZY and doesnt stop!! If I had a 3 pounder... I would be paranoid about leaving them alone. thank you very much for the site. Thats kinda what I was wondering.. if registering in avdance was necessary and if they contact you when they find a fit. Im just concered about finding a reputable rescue... Not sure if thats how it works.... but you know how there are reputable breeders and then not so great ones... does it work the same with rescues? Do some care more about the dogs than others? Does anyone have any personal experience in the NYC area? |
