Scared of Everything Yorkie I have a 9 year old Yorkie named Fanci. She is my heart. But she is terrified of everything. If she is lying on the ottoman and a fly has gotten in the house and buzzes around her ear she will jump down and run and hide in my closet. We have a beach house about 2 and 1/2 hours from where we live. We go every weekend. Of course she goes with us. Whenever we pass a big truck or a loud car she backs up to me and hides. I won't even go into the numerous nights we have been awakened by her due to bad weather. If we are not home, she will jump in the garden tub. What can be done about this. I have discussed this with the vet on numerous occasions. He gave her a tranquizer but when it would wear off she would bite until it totally got out of her system. Then he told me to give her Benyadril. I have done this but it doesn't really seem to help. Do any of you have any suggestions?? I need help! I'm afraid she is going to have a heart attack. |
My 8 year old baby is scared of a lot of things too. I think it's gotten worse the older he's gotten. He hides in the bathroom during every storm. During the last really bad storm I found him in a shoe box in the back of my closet! He also wakes us up in the middle of the night if a car is loud going down the street or some other weird sound. We just try to comfort him when he's scared by holding him. Sometimes i just let him go to his comfort spot (the bathroom, a shoebox, or wherever) and let him come out when he's ready. |
Cindi it sounds like you need to consult a dog behavorist.I think a professional can help coach you in technics to boost Fanci's confidence level and teach you how to react to her fears so that you don't accidently make the fears worse. While vets specialise in medicine ,they don't necessarily know much about problem behaviors, and so will try to help you with your problem with drugs .If the drugs are'nt working then possibly training is the key. Oh my...I don't believe it! Another one with a fly phobia? My Ramsey is terrified of flies. So I hunt them down inside, kill them, and show her the corpse. See, you can relax, it's dead now. |
At the age of 9 yrs, I'm not sure anything can help now. For a puppy, I have always recommended reassurance and showing them there is nothing to be scared about. With an older yorkie, I honestly doubt it would work. I say that simply because I have had an older yorkie and I just know how they are. I hope someone can help you, though. Just love her and do the best you can if you can't find any other help. I understand what you are saying when you say you are scared she'll have a heart attack. It's sad to see them so scared.:( |
