Question about ears! At what age should their ear start standing up? We went to our breeder last night to pick out our baby and one of his littermates ear just started standing, but none of the other are. She said they probably would by the end of this week. They are 5 weeks old today. I'm not worried about it...I'm just wondering. |
1 Attachment(s) My little guy has one up and one down, its too cute. Dont think the other one will ever go up - he is 11 months old. |
Kingstons were up at 7 weeks but were helped by being taped but his littermates were up before him. Lilys were up when I got her then fell when she was teething and came back up a few weeks later. Make sure they shave the tips and this will help them stand. |
Ears take time as anything else. 5 weeks is still a little young, IMO. The breeder needs to work with the ears by shaving them and possibly taping and massaging them. Some ears are just never meant to stand. Usually around 7-8 weeks is when I start working with my pup's ears by first shaving them. Then, I make other adjustments as necessary. |
Thanks! I thought it was a little early, but his brothers are straight up! I think she might have pointed it out since they are already up (good ear genes i guess). She grooms every Thurs., so she keeps the ears shaved. She's been breeding for 30 years so I trust her completely. She normally doesn't let you put a deposit on a puppy till 6 weeks, but we are going out of town for two weeks next week and we wanted to make sure we got one! He can come home the week after we get back...worked out perfect! |
Mufasa is 14 weeks old and his ears aren't up either. Should I tape or shave them or just do nothing at all. |

It fits in the palm of my hand is the perfect size for puppy ears! I shave her ears completely inside and out once a week, she was a little unsure at first but now she knows she gets lots of treats and cuddles afterwards she comes running when she hears the clippers!:D |
So you shave the entire ear inside and out????? |
1 Attachment(s) Just the top third on the inside and 3/4 of the outside. Thats just what I do, I know many say just the top third in and out but Mika has BIG ears LOL I want to give them a good chance!!!:D |
Thanks so much!!! Oh, by the way, I LOVE the name Mika!!!! :) |

I only shave the top 1/3 of the ears inside and out. If you do it yourself, be very careful when you are tipping the edges with scissors. Always cut from bottom to top. You are less likely to cut the ear that way. (i'm a groomer) When my Max's ears weren't standing at 12 weeks, even with the tips shaved, I decided to tape them. I think that I almost waited too late because they never were perfect V's. But they did stand up and the way they sat gave him character!:D |
