New to Yorkies and House breaking problems Hello, I am new to this site and new to having a Yorkie Puppy. My girl is 12 weeks old and I have had her since she was 9 weeks old. I need advise on housebreaking her. I keep her in a room that is gated off from the rest of the house when I am not home or able to pay attention to her. She will not use the pee pee pads. When she is in that room, she will hold in until I let her out, then she will do her in business in my house. I have scolded her when I catch her in the action and take her to her pads, but I am not having any luck at all. Any advise would be appreciated. thanks mkae |
I hope someone can correct me if I am wrong. BUT do not scold her. Insted dont say anything and ignor her other than taking her outside right when she does it. And when you let her out of the room (the one she holds it in) take her straight outside untill she goes potty. Then praise the heck out of her, give her treats, throw her a mini backyard party if you have too. Don't give her free run of the house, untill she learns to take it outside. If she goes in the house. take her outside let her learn thats where she needs to go, if she dont go, take her back to her designated room, an hour later take her back outside. Repeat this untill she finally goes outside. When she does, thrw a mini party, treat her, and let her have free run for about an hour, then take her back outside..........so on and so on. if she is able to hold it while in her special room at the age of 12 weeks then she is already doing great! Be patient. I understand that you cant expect too much until they are around 6 months |
Welcome to YT. This is a wonderful site to learn about your Yorky. The other suggestions are good. I think the key is be consistent and be patient; she is still very young. |
Just keep taking her outside and being consistent with her. She is not going to know to use the pads unless you take her to them, wait for her to go and praise her every time. If you don't want to do that, just take her outside often and try to prevent accidents. Once her body matures a little and she can hold it long enough to let you know she needs to go outside, she will know exactly where to go and what to do. Loki is a bad example because he has diabetes insipidus (water goes right though him, he pees often, which gave us lots of practice!) but he had no clue until he was 4-5 months old. At 6 months his accidents dropped dramatically but still happened. By 10 months he was ringing the bell to go outside every time and accidents only happened if we didn't hear him or let him out fast enough. It might take a while!!! |
training I am also having a time with my Yorkie,he is a year in a half.I only have had him less than a year. I have tried everything,if I go out with him and say peepee,he goes. Now my husband just bought me a female for a companion for my Dante,she is 13 weeks,they ge along great,now I have two that pees. I have tried the papers on Donte,but not on Bella,which I am going to do today. All I know is I love my dogs,but I am so tired of cleaning pee and poop!!! Also my Donte has a cough or like a choking sound,I have been to my vet a couple of times and he says Yorkies do that,do they?It is mostly at night. Thankyou for any help. Dianne Quote:

Just keep taking her out, every hour. is she dont go, then put her in her crate or x-pen or deignated area! She will eventually get the Idea, and when she does, PRAISE her......... and keep on her. The more times you offer her to go outside the more she'll get the Idea. everytime she does praise her, and let her have free run of the house for about an hour, then back ouside to try to go. if she dont go, back to the designated area! REPEAT! That is what I did with Bruizer, Then once he desided that outside was where he needed to go, then I introduced the bell. He eventually got the idea that he had to ring the bell to go outside to get free run of the house! (kinda like 1 + 1 =2) Good luck! |
