Losing weight!!!!! Koda, my 9.5 year old yorkie went from 5.5 pounds to 4.5 pounds since we started to go for .5 hour bike rides daily (past 3 weeks). He is on puppy food right now so should be getting plenty of carbs. Shoud I be concerned??? p.s. I left for vacation when he was 7 months and the person I left him with free fed him along with going through a bag of treats a day between her 3 dogs and koda. Was he just 1 pound over weight? |
At his age he shouldn't be on the puppy food. The puppy protein is too much and they will get fatter than they need be. Not sure if he was over eating. |
I am so stupid! Sorry he is 9.5 Months old! lol! |
Usually around 8 months my vet suggest weaning them to an adult formula. Not sure but you can ask your vet what he/she thinks is the best age. |
Is your dog running beside you as you cycle? If so i imagine that he's suddenly using a whole heap more energy than he used to and that's where the weight went. the perfect weight is just being able to feel their ribs but not their spine. tho a puppy needs a little extra in case of growth spurts - he'll keep growing til he's two! BEWARE: try not to let your dog run too much until he's 18 months to 2 years old as his joints aren't fully formed until that age. what ever he does just playing or messing around is fine but if you're out jogging / cycling with him you're pushing him further than he would naturally push himself. Just something to keep in the back of your mind. Hope that helps. |

that's cool. i'm overly conscious of doggy exercising at the moment cos dougal's got a torn groin muscle (probably from being worked too hard when his muscles were cold). And so he's on crate rest for two weeks! He's seriously unimpressed with 9 and 1/2 hours a day in a box! Doggies need warm ups and cool downs just like humans. I've even got little leg stretches to do for them after agility practice. |
