Step in Harness * I have a Houdini. I really like my step in harness. I like that they take all the pressure off the trachea. My problem is that when Romeo tucks his head down and pulls on the leash that the harness comes off! I adjusted it tightly. (room for my pinky under the material) Is this a common step in harness problem? The type I have is a fabric material. |
WOW he is a houdini :) Perhaps trying a different style or brand of harness? I tried about 100 different types until I could find one that I felt safe having Simon in (he's a puller) and now use Cindy's harnesses (chattiesmom) and I really like them. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm only asking because I did it but are you sure you are putting it on the right way? I struggled with a step in for days before I realized I had it on ALL wrong. Then when I finally figured it out I found that it loosened up while we were walking. Good Luck~ |
The lady that a bought it from showed me specifically how to use it. He really gets bull headed and pulls. I am going to give chattiesmom a try. Everyone says wonderful things about her harness. I have a paypal snafu to work out and I will order from her. I don't want to give up on the step in because I like that it takes the pressure off their delicate necks. |
I just found out I have the same problem with Layla's harness! In class last week we were passing our dogs around and she got to about the 5th person and decided she really wanted to come back to me. She started pulling backwards against the leash and I looked up and saw her lift her front paw out of the harness and come bolting into my lap! |
I have a Buddy Belt. It is a step in harness. Murphy was able to get out of every harness and also chewed his harnesses. Th Buddy Belt is made of leather and has a buckle. |
I only use Cindy's (Chattiesmom) step-in harnesses, and I have a little Houdini also. He's actually worked his way out of travel crates, playpens, and car seats, so I understand your concerns. These are the only ones he hasn't been able to get out of. The straps don't need to be adjusted that often, but there are several adjustment points, not just one. These are kind of like a bra...two loops and you put their front legs in each loop and pull it up over the top and snap it. It also has two D rings on top of that to attach the leash for even more security. At no time is this harness anywhere close to Gizmo's neck or throat. I really like these and find them to be very secure. |
I just ordered from chattiesmom and I'm so excited. |
I'm sure you'll like it as much as we do. :) Off topic now....I LOVE your avatar with that little tongue! How cute is that! lol |
I just got my buddybelt which is a leather step in. The best stepin leather harness ever. I am so pleased that my Diddy doesn't even realize he is wearing and cannot slip out.:) |
my tootie is a puller too! He just wont give up! I also use Cindy's (Chattiesmom) harnesses for both of mine and they have worked wonderful for me! Good Luck! d |

Good luck with your new harness :) |
Puppia Scooter uses a Puppia Harness. It is a step in as well. He started with the x-small and now uses a small. I found them available online as no area stores carried them. A neighbor of mine has a 7 yr old Yorkie who travels between Austin and Paris a few times a year. She has used one for years but originally could only get them overseas. They cost around $20 and come in a bunch of colors. They are made a soft mesh (think basketball jerseys) lined with fleece so they are super soft. Scooter had some harness fitting problems originally and a leg would slip through the area where the head goes. I found it much easier to slide it on and then use a safety pin to slightly clip the back making it a little tighter. The problem was his head was much bigger than his neck. With that, problem solved. He now fits perfectly into the harness. If you need a different harness, look into Puppia brand. Good luck. |
