Do you see any safety problems with this? As some of you might know my little houdini has learned how to climb/jump out of his playpen. As a temporary solution (i'm going to have my aunt make me a mesh top but she's on vacation right now) i was thinking of buying a fitted crib sheet and stretching it over the top and securing it with safety pins or small stitches. Does anyone see any possible safety problems with this design? I think for a while at least if the tops not open he won't try. I just don't want him to get hurt. |
Would he have enough ventilation? |
i would really need a pictuer to see....... if he got his head out a little hole and could not hold his body weight anmore and couldnt remove his head he could hang himself.......... |
What would happen if you turned the playpen upside down? Or maybe put a piece of plywood on top? Probably the safest thing for long term is to buy a taller xpen. If an accident happens, you'll feel terrible and the cost of one vet visit would be greater than buying a new xpen. Just my thoughts. |
it has mesh sides so ventilation is not a problem. I can't turn it upside down because the way it's made there would be an area between the top and the floor, maybe not big enough to get out, but he would probably try to dig out. Plywood makes me nervous, but that is a solution. Once i get the sheet rigged i will check for any possible places he could get his head stuck. |

If we're in the room watching he won't try because he knows he's not supposed to get up, but the minute we leave the room we hear him jump out. he's a sneaky little booger. |
I would say that you need to try it first for a short time...put him in it and then leave the room for 10 - 30 minutes and listen...then go and check on him and see what he does, if he is okay then try it for a little longer...once you feel comfortable with how he is doing then I would say it is okay...if he gets dangerous with it at least you will be right there to help him out...just my suggestion!!! |
1 Attachment(s) what about baby stroller netting i think they also make it for playpens too ! yep they do make it !! |
Not a dog, but it worked My son learned to climb out of his crib at 7 months. I bought a small net (tiny holes, too small for a yorkie's/kids head) and fitted it across the top of his crib, sewed elastic loops on each corner and attached to the bottom of the legs. I was so scared that he would climb out in the middle of the night and hurt himself. Good thing too as by the time he was 13 he had made so many trips to the emergency for accidents (27) that the doctor actually gave me one trip "on the house". This kid was walking and running at 7 months, riding a trike at 12 months and mini bikes at 24 months. Can you tell he had ADHD? LOL Since he became an adult, he has had a serious motorcycle accident (laid him up for almost 2 years) had an emergency appendectomy (23) an emergency gall bladder removal (26) and a tumor removed (28). He has also broken his arm and cut himself so many times for stitches that it is just nuts. He cannot walk across an empty room without hurting himself LOL. |
Browniesmom- that netting is an awesome idea where did you find it? milliecorrales-sounds like you had a little mover & shaker on your hands, my brother & uncle were the same way. Sounds like with all the problems he has maybe you should put him back into the crib with the net over it. it might be safer for him. |

Climbing out Yorkies Hello We have many yorkies who found out how to jump the pen so we bought higher pens and it fixed the problem. As also had puppies whom we where scared they could get their head stuck in the pen and we bough a small pen made with fiber (no holes) which was great. You can also have one completely closed off with softer fibers good for indoors when they jump and outdoors (keep's mosquitos out!) I have supplied the link to where I saw this pen. (Also provides shade in the sun) I have not tried this pen yet I just fond out about it. It also comes with a bag where you can carry it to the park or something similar in case you need a pen there. Good idea for a pen. The only problem I find is the price get you money out $450. Great Idea but Bad price. http://www.petacular.com/products/Pu...Playpen-H.html This would probably not be a good pen for me as I have many dogs (breeder) and we like to connect several pens together outside to give them allot of space to run around in the yard. I hope this helps. Marc-O |
That dog pen is so cute...it's like a little circus tent. I'm still working on making the playpen feasible since I spent $50 dollars on it and I thought that was a lot. Thanks- browniesmom, I'll actually go to babies-r-us this weekend. I looked on the website but there website isn't real user friendly. Geez after all this if I ever decide to have a baby i'll be all set. |
