too young? Hi, Im taking Sadie to the Vet today for her second set of shots. When I called to make the appt. they said on the phone that we will discuss heartworm and rabies at the appt. Ive heard that they shouldn't get the rabies shot untill they are older, and I've heard of some pups having reactions to it... How old were your babies when they got it, and were they ok afterwards? Thanks |
Both of mine had their rabies at 4 months and were fine no reactions. |
I believe Maximus was almost 4 months but it was after the last set of shots...I made a seperate appt. since Maximus was soo little and he gets very lethargic when he gets shots!! |
Bentley was right at 4 months too and he was fine! |
Bailey got his rabies shot along with his last set of puppy shots at 4 months and was just fine |
This is from one article. Hope this helps. It's time for me to take Kacee, too. Rabies shots are started at sixteen weeks of age, boostered a year later, and every one to three years after that, depending on local laws and your veterinarian's recommendation. Unvaccinated dogs that come into close contact with a skunk must be quarantined or put to sleep. Vaccinated dogs that have skunk contact should be given a rabies booster as soon as possible, regardless of when they were last immunized. http://www.petsandmore.ca/vdogpuppycare.html |
Tiny is my only yorkie that had an reaction. He went into shock and it was really scary. Now I make sure he I tell his vet every year( even though we are using the same vet) that he has had an allergic reaction. As for my other yorkies. They are all fine with the shots. |
Stewie got his @ 6 months and had a horrible reaction. I thought I was going to lose him. |
If they are allergic to it, they are allergic at any age, I would guess. Tinkerbell had her at 4 months and everything went fine. I had a small dog get one at 6 years old and have a reaction. |

Our vet said today that 3 months is the youngest they will do a rabies shot. |
Thanks for all of your input. We just got back from the Vet and she got some of her shots. Shes getting the rabies one in a couple of weeks, so she will be 4 months by then. She was so well behaved though! And I finally found out how much she weighs..shes 2.1 pounds and 14 weeks...how big do you think she will get. (not that it matters, I love her to pieces) One more question - they were talking about spaying and said it can be done around 5 months...personally I'm not comfortable with that because shes so small and I've heard horror stories. I'm going to talk to them more in a couple weeks when I go back, but how old were your babies when they got spayed? Sorry for all the questions, but Sadie is my first dog and I want to make sure I do everything right! |
They can not give rabies shots until the puppy is AT LEAST 4MONTHS OLD... And according to the growth chart she should be in the 4lb range when full grown.. |
Pudgy gets his next month on the 13th and he will be 4mths.. |
