a worried mommy i'm new here *waves* and i tried to search other threads to see if any other yorkies had this problem but couldn't find one. i just got romeo a month ago from some previous owners (hes one and a half). since then he's really warmed up to us and loves his new mom alot. the problem is he doesn't like to play! other yorkies i've met love to play and are fiesty little dogs. i'd try to play with him but he just looks at me like i'm an idiot. haha. my husband and i have throught that he might of been abused because when we go to pick him up he goes into the dog fatal position. he gets fed well, is totally healthy, a really loving dog and loves to cuddle. i want the best for my baby and hope that nothings troubling him. so my question: is there anyway i can coax him out of this ? |
Time ,patience, a soft voice and lots of love.. Should do the trick ..:) |

You may be right. That's so sad, but I think in time he'll come around. Have you tried playing outside with a sqeakie ball? Being outside might quash some of his inhibitions. Worth a try anyway. They just have to get past the fear of being abused. |

How low can you go Lol That is a hard one. When hopefully time will help you figure that out. He might still need to get use to his new surroundings. When I first got my Yorkie he was shy, but now he runs around like he owns the place. My best guess is to find a toy that he really likes and try to start up play using that as a motivator. Also stay low to the ground. I know when Im standing up its easier for me to give my yorkie commands but when Im laying down all he want to do is play. |

yes get on the floor with him and talk to him softly or what i would do is use that squeaky playful joyful happy voice.. kinda like your talking to a baby.. goo goo gaa gaa... the tone of your voice will help alot.. he will come around you will see |
they do respond to the tone of your voice as well as your mood. everyone's advice was really good. when i first got my puppy i'd talk to him in baby voice (and felt kinda silly) but he loved it. lol. i've also learned that his favorite type of toy is a squeaky toy. LOVES them! my trainer even sometimes has me use the squeak toy to get Moses to do tricks, because it works better than treats sometimes! he just likes the sound. lol. so yes get your baby toys and see what he responds to. be patient & gives lots of love! :) |
I got my Jamie when he was 8 weeks (before I knew that that was too young) and he came from a really nice lady who I'm sure never abused him but when you went to pick him up he still cringed away like he thought you were going to hit him. Then I read a post on here about how we were so big compared to them and that I needed to warn him before I came toward him to pick him up. So now everytime we go to pick him up, I say "Up" and he turns around and stands perfectly straight up and lets me pick him up without the cringing away. As far as the playing, maybe he just hasn't found a toy he really likes. Jamie only likes plush toys and balls. Of course we went through several tug ropes and such before I caught on. My best purchase yet is a $0.99 plastic bouncy ball thats as big as him. It's the blue and white marblized look ball that stores sell in the summer for kids. He LOVES that thing and will chase it around and around the house for hours. Good luck with your baby! He sounds so sweet. |
thank you so much for all your replys! they are all so helpful! i'm going to try them all out and hopefully he will reveal his spunkyside. :D |
