Question!! Is this true???? Ok so Yesterday me, DH and Bandit went to Petland to kill some time waiting on a prescription to be filled down the street....we went in and seen this teapot....male....well he is the same age as Bandit....actually born a day after Bandit and he has got to be every bit of 8 lbs....Bandit doesnt even weight 3 lbs yet.....he is only 13 weeks old. I felt so bad for this baby because I know he's been there in that little cage for a few weeks....its like nobody wants him....and I know how bad it is to buy from a pet store....I've heard all the stories....so it stears me away from them....and just to make it clear I got Bandit from a reputable breeder. I just feel so bad for him and wish I could help....someone told me that if they dont sell that they will go back to the Puppy mill and possibly die because nobody will buy him. Is this true?? I mean I really dont have the $1400 to buy him so I'm not going to but is it true they will send him back and might kill him?? My heart is breaking for him right now. I just cant stand to see these animals in these little cubes at the pet stores....I know I shouldnt even go in there but I cant help it....i'm drawn to every one of them. Sorry this is getting so long but I really want to know the answer to this!! Can anybody answer this question?? |
I'll bump this up for you. I really don't know what happens to them. They probably do go back to the breeder, but they might sell them elsewhere. It's terribly sad to think about. I know.:( |
It is horrible....I cant stay away from these places either. I just want to go get them all out of there but I know tomorrow it will be full again so its dumb to think that way...I just cant stand to see it!! |
:aimeeyork I do not know what they do if they do not go to a home. Poor little guy, I wish he did not have to be in there:aimeeyork I do not understand why they can't ask a little bit less $ ? :animal-pa |
pet stores I was told that Debbie's Petland puts their dogs to sleep that they do not sell. We actually "rescued" two dogs from them before they went in the "van" for the trip to the vets. This is only what I have been told. I have no proof of this. We were also told that they do not release them to rescues..... |
I don't know if that is true or not but a friend of mine (20 years ago) got her first yorkie from a pet store and he was reduced to half price because he was "left over" from Christmas. I know it's really sad, I don't even go to places that sell animals. It still hard for me to go to Petsmart with the cats because I want to rescue them all! |
If he was affordable for me right now I would go get him...I know nobody is taking him because he is so big....I would love to have a "teapot"!! He is so cute too. I know how horible it is to get a dog from a pet store and all that....so please nobody say anything negative to me about wanting to get him....my heart is too big to just let it go or ignore the fact that he is in there and may never make it to a home. |

I dont blame you... I wish I could get them all too! No matter where they came from just so I can give them a loving home. There is a classified ad in my paper (I work for a newspaper) someone is selling a 3 yo male for $400. I want to buy him soooooooooo bad. I just cannot cannot afford the expense of another baby. I can't even buy him with the hopes of reselling him because id get attached the second I saw him and I would keep him. He is really weighing on my mind though. I wish I could get this little guy! |
oh wow if this little guy at Petland was $400 I would have jumped all over it lol. It is so hard to resist the urge. I want to help them all!! |

In our mall pet store, there was a yorkie that was on the bigger side and no one would buy it. After it was there for a while ( not sure how long) they put the puppy on sale and some one bought it. it makes no sense to ship the puppy back to the mill... the cost is too much. The puppy was greatly reduced and some one went home with it very happy with a yorkie for less money. |

at least they didnt kill the poor thing.. there should be a law:thumbdown |

we offered to buy them for the lowest price possible....somone over heard the people working there talking about the yorkie and silkie being sent to the main faciity to be PTS...they called us and we were able to get them both really cheap....... at first they were not going to but then when they found out that we would take both they reduced as much as they could and put in a "coupon".... |
I never thought that I would buy from a pet store because of the horror stories that I had heard, but this past October the pet store in our local mall had two yorkies. My son always wanted to go inside to see them. The boy was larger than the girl, but she was more active. After a short time the boy sold, but the little girl was still there. Time passed and she was still there, and so little. It was like no one wanted her and she was living her life in that little wire cage. I would talk to the cashiers when we made our weekly trip to the pet store. Each one told me that she was healthy, but becasue her hair was kinda thin on top everyone had passed her up even though she was only 1lb,3 oz and by this time 4 months old. One day we were in there, she was looking through the glass right at me. It was as if she was speaking to my heart. After that I couldnt stop thinking about this little girl, so the next week we went back and I bought her. She is the most active, hyper, sweet, loving (when she wants to be) little girl I have ever seen. We named her Tenci, and she is up to 3lbs 1 oz now. I think she is beautiful, and I'm glad all those people passed her up becasue now she is here with us. It was almost like she was sent to be with us because my Gizmo who was three died this past February. She helped ease the pain with a little happiness. I guess what I am trying to say is in my opinion even if they come from a pet store they still have little hearts and souls and need someone too. I understand completly how you feel about this little guy. |
While I hate petstores for being a part of the puppy mill chain...if I were to come across some yorkies and they were going to be put to sleep I would probably bargain them down and see if I could take them and rehome them. I can't fathom in a country such as ours how we can't stop these mills. My heart just hurts for these babies. |
It' a double-edged sword! You buy from pet stores and you are supporting puppy mills. :thumbdown But what happens to those puppies in pet stores that aren't purchased? I would "never" buy from a pet store, knowing what I know now. But if I saw a puppy like this little guy, my heart would ache! |
I once knew someone who worked at the pet store at the mall and they had a small yorkie that was ill and her aunt, who also worked there took him home and nursed him back to health...They were letting her keep him too...She had other bigger dogs and I kept trying to get him for a friend of mine...It was week after week trying and she finally decided to keep him...His name was Peanut !!! I never saw him, but I loved him.! What's with that? I wanted him away fromthe big doggers and thought she could always get another...so that one didn't go back to the mill...and that was in jersey....I wonder if the employees know where they come from ??? Does anyone know someone that works at a pet store?:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa I heard that in England they did away with pet shops, is anyone out there from England who knows if this is true? |
Oh, I forgot....My friend bought a poodle from a small pet shop (before we were educated on mills and pet shops) and because she was 6 months old, she got her for half price !!!!! how uncomfortable being confined to a cage that long.....:(:(:( she lived for 14 yrs., the sweet little baby.... |
OMG .... I did not know that .... Quote:

:eek::eek::eek: ... are we still talking about DOGS ???? :eek::eek::eek: |
I think they all have a right to live and be loved, no matter where they come from. I say rescue the ones that need it most. Most breeders pups have a warm and loving home. While the ones from mills will never know this feeling. Sometimes I will go into the pet store and visit them, pet them, talk to them. There is always someone comming in to pet them and give them attention, hold them if you ask. I am not saying i'm for puppy mills. Believe me I'm not. I just think they need a chance too. They did not ask to be here, they were forced. I'm just saying next time you pass a pet store go in and show some love and attention. They love it. Don't treat them like their a big mistake. They don't know that. I don't understand how some people can put down pet store dogs or cats. I know you are thinking about where they come from and it turns you off. But they don't know that. They just see a chance for attention and a little love. So go on in and let them know you care. I am now stepping off my soap box. Sorry if I upset anyone. |
I don't know what they do with them, but i also have heard the stories about store yorkies. He is big, so most likely nobody wants a big yorkie, which is sad. Maybe they can work out a better price with you if he isn't selling. My guy who is 7 1/2lbs. was a store yorkie, he was just too cute to be there. He was 2 lbs. when we got him. I have not had one issue with him. Besides the bacteria in his poop early on which was treated quickly, he is totally healthy and a very strong yorkie. My friend got her two from a reputable breeder and she has had nothing but problems with them, they are so fragile. So i guess what i'm trying to say is, you just never no, if you love him just get him. |
Thanks everyone for all the support. I kind of expected to get yelled at on here for wanting to buy a yorkie from a pet store, especially Petland. I've never bought from a pet store before....I've gotten all my animals as strays or from the shelter until Bandit....I got him from a breeder. I think I am going to see if he is still there and at least give them my number if they are going to "send him back" and I will come up and see if we can work something out. I would hate to see him not go to a loving home but since I am in the process of moving I just dont have as much as they are asking for. and you will bet I will be using my own vet for getting him checked out if I get him because I've heard their vets are paid to say the dog is healthy so they dont get in trouble even if they are sick. |
This is why I don't go into pet stores that sell dogs. (Even if I'm not buying a dog, I'd still be supporting their business by making other purchases and since I'm not going to buy anything, why go in?) I don't know what the fate of the unsold/unwanted puppies is. Hopefully they eventually find homes. It is hard to resist trying to rescue them from the pet stores, but IMO it's important to stay strong and send that message. Theoretically (can generally) speaking, if you cave and come up w/ $1400 to buy the dog, what about the next one that comes in to take his place? Will you save that one too? What about the miller breeder having to up their pups to continue supplying the pet stores? Its a harsh reality. |
