Limited Reg. or Full Breeding rights? I am looking to breed yorkies eventually and wanted to know if I should offer breeding rights or limited registration? I want to offer my dogs as pets (even though they will be show quality) But I was wondering what my YT'ers recommend. |
Even though your sire and dam may come from a show background...there is no way of determining whether or not any puppies produced would be show quality until they are perhaps 6 months old. |
This is a great question, and it shows that you've been doing some research and are thoroughly checking out everything. I believe that you should offer limited registration even though the pets will be stunning. :D It's is my belief that when you produce a pet, you are responsible forever for that pet, and any pet it happens to produce. Many breeders are taking it one step further and neutering the pets before leaving because there are so many unethical breeders, who buy a pet with limited registration, and go ahead and register it with one of the alternative registries. These are the same people who will argue that all registries are the same. There may come a time when you find someone that has a true gift for breeding and believes in the same ideals as you, and you might consider taking this person under your wing and offering him a breeding quality dog with full registration. You would thoroughly want to check this person out because you would still be responsible for any pets this person produces. When I say responsible I mean morally, not legally. |
Well I will leave the answers up to the pro's ;) lol!! I just wanted to say I am glad to see you back posting again :) |
Limited Registration IMO Limited Registration, only because not everyone should or could be a Breeder! That comes with alot of responsibility and there are alot of people out there that Breed their Dogs for the wrong reasons! Not all of us have the same Standards. Breeding is a delicate subject for me so I won't say too much. |
I actually think that’s ONE of the ways you can tell a good breeder from a lousy breeder. |

The best of show breeders have done things that a non show breeder would never consider.. and I myself have seen these practices.. anne |
I only sell pups with spay/neuter/limited only and would co-own if the person is REALLY serious about showing and eventually being a breeder. A pet is what it is, a pet and should not be bred. And not everyone is or will ever be a responsilbe breeder. I dont have many litters and I keep them a little longer to evaluate them for showing/breeding quality. With the growing number of "alternative registries", I am now going to spay/neuter before I let them go to pet homes. I do not want my valuable bloodlines to fall into the hands of mills, byb'rs or anyone that is trying to "up" the quality of their "alternative registered breeding program". I also think that by using a spay/neuter/limited contract defines a reputable, responsible breeder. |
when i got lily may the breeder gave me a discount because i was going to get her spayed. |
Please spay/neuter any pets you sell in the future, even if it means early spay/neuter. You don't ever want to take the slightest chance that one of your babies will end up producing offspring that would be sold to a disreputable breeder. I spent Sat. at a dog auction. Any dog that had "champion" in their pedigree was snatched up quickly by bad byb's. How would you feel if the pet you sold had puppies that eventually ended up at a dog auction. I couldn't live with myself....could you? Again, please spay/neuter any pets before they go to their new homes. |
The breeder of Mingtoy always sell her pet pups when they are spayed or neutered . This way , she is sure there will not be `accidents ' . |
I would advise to sell on limited registration...especially as you first start out. IMO, you shouldn't sell a dog w/ full rights unless it is going to be to a show home or a breeder who is going to work to improve the line, not take it a step backwards, not to a pet owner. That type situation would require a certain level of involvement on your part, which is alot to take on when you are just starting out and still learning yourself.:) Also, as others have mentioned, you may want to consider having the pups s/n before they leave your home...that way you eliminate all possibilities of alternate registration or accidents in the future. |
Thinking the pups will all be show quality is a big illusion . All my puppies are spayed or neutered before leaving my home . |
