leash training About how long does it take to get them used to walking on a leash? BeBe detests her harness. I've been putting it on her to walk around in so she can get used to it, but when I attach the leash, it's a bite fest! She wrestles and bites at it fiercely. We practiced walking with it around the house a bit and when we made a full circle, I gave her a bit of cheese as a treat. Any other advice? |
Braxton didn't like walking on a leash either when I first started... I use a collar with him, not a harness but I just let him walk around the house with the leash dragging for a few days and then I started taking him on walks outside and he got used to it in about a week..He didn't like it when I tried to walk him in the house. I think it makes a difference when you do it outside. He really loves it now and I don't have any problems. You are just going to have to be persistent and keep trying everyday. It is also good to reward them with treats in the beginning when they start walking like you want them to. |
Independent little cuss, isn't she? Lol, Bebe sounds like a handful. Joey, didn't really take to walks till around 4 months. I don't know if fighting them everyday is worth it because I see this as an age issue as well, and when they are ready they will love it. If I were you I would make the walks short, Joey wore his harness on car rides as well, and loved the car, so maybe this will help her get use the harness. How old is she? |
Lucky also hated a lease and harness to start with. He loves going outside so I would say "you wanna go outide?" he would bark and I would say come on lets put your harness on. Now he knows and gets in my lap and waits to get it on. They are so smart. |

Roxi was the same, we just kept her in the harness around house and then after a while, also attached the leash for her to get used to it... But what I have learned with my second, mt boy Rocco is I started him out with a harness vest. It offers more support, which they like, and it softer. Then I built up to a reg harness. But I would def try a harness vest at first, worked for us!! Good luck!! |

My little LuLu is 2 months old. When we go out, I put her harness on (which is a little hard because she doesn't stay still), and then I carry her with her leash attached and ready to go. When she starts crying, I put her down and she sits there. I keep calling her, encouraging her to come to me. When she doesn't, I just pick her up again and keep walking. Meanwhile, she's watching our other dogs, including our other Yorkie, Chewy. I keep putting her down and trying it. Usually, on the way back (we walk about a mile), she will do it....she starts running and I can't even keep up with her. It's like she knows she's going home, and so then she will put up with the harness and leash. Every day she gets a little better. Patience and consistency. |
I've always just put the harness and leash on them and watched them inside the house as they walked around to get used to it. I didn't hold onto the leash, I just let them drag it behind them, but remember, if you do this, keep a good eye on them as the leash can get caught on things. |
When Javah wants to go out he goes right to where his bag is and barks at it. LOL He knows his harness and leash are in there but he too also starts going wild, biting and not holding still so we can put it on.:( |
i also use a collar, but my puppy is a little bigger than average so i feel like it works better- when he gets distracted or lays down i just give a quick, firm tug and say his name and then when he gets up and starts walking i give him praise and a treat. he's made LOADS of progress from the first few walks! |

Hot Rod hated his step in harness (and still does-we still use it from time to time). He constantly chews on it. I don't think he likes the buckles. I got him a vest harness and other than getting used to the noise of the velcro, he is fine with that on. I use the step in now because it has been so hot and I think that it is cooler than the vest. He was fine once he figured out how far he could go with his leash. At first he would just keep running and then get jerked back because he reached the end. Also, I wound up getting the next size up leash which gives you 16' instead of just 10'. It really has not been that different for him and it gives him extra roaming length. |
