Hello Everyone !! Hi ! I'm new here and this is my second post. I'm proud mama to 4 month old Amanda Rose . Amanda is a handfull and she has been with us nearly 3 weeks and trying to find her place in the pack . We have Mia (Bichon ) age 4 and Willy T ,a gawgeous Golden Retreiver nearly 2 yrs old . Amanda is my 5th yorkie all others have passed over the rainbow bridge. We are currently working on potty training , she seems to have no clue what its all about. Looking for help as she is not like the others, it seems it takes these little ones time to get it .:confused: My first lil man was great the second (female ) took forever , 2 rescues that arrived without a clue.Now we have Amanda that , well it just has not clicked yet . Amanda also hates combs and the clippers , She fights them so we are going slowly , a bit at a time. I'm very open to suggestions :) :aimeeyork |
Hi, I would like to welcome you and Amanda to Yorkietalk. You're right, yorkies do take more time than other dogs; I don't know if it's due to their size or independent nature. Welcome!!! Hi first of all welcome to YT!!! As for your queries all I can say is it's early days! Mika is paper trained but rarely "goes" outside unless she is taken out! I shave her ear's weekly and she does NOT like it but I whisper words of encouragement and make a big fuss when I'm done! As for the brush, I think its her favourite toy!LOL! I brush her daily to try to get her used to it, but all she wants to do is eat the brush!!! |
Welcome! 4 months is really young, I am sure Amanda Rose will catch on! As for the grooming, just keep at it. Cooper was the king at biting the comb and basically being a pain, when it came to grooming. But I continued to comb him and as I did that I fed him treats. At 8 months he lets me comb him without a problem. Good luck! |

Thanks !! Hi everyone !! I appreciate the input here. My hubby takes her outside at late night and during the day with the others ; she just wanders around (On Leash ) without a clue and gets back in the house and quickly disappears and does her " bidness " somewhere in the house . Amanda is fast :D and I know you all know what I mean . She has not made the connection . She sleeps in a large crate (open ) at the foot of our bed until she is older and trained. She was supposedly sort of crate trained when I purchased her at 13 weeks ;she was not. I actually think they should have sold them sooner ,When I tried that tact, she shreiked :( it has been 15 years since I had a yorkie baby ) I will post pics soon , she is a cutie and looks very different from my other two did as babies. I do have pictures of the whole crew , rescues also .:) |
Welcome to YT. I'm a new yorkie mommy so I don't have a lot of advice to give. I just take Leo out after every nap and first thing in the morning and he had done really well thus far. Good Luck! |

I have to say I feel your pain. We just got our first puppy trained and then I found Tag. He does the same thing your puppy is doing with the exception of hiding. I try really hard not to react when he has an accident so he won't hide. I also am trying to hold him when I know it's close to time for him to potty. When he gets squirmy I take him out. I hope this helps but I am truly a novice when it comes to this.:wavey: |

Sorry to say my best potty training advise has to be done the minute you bring your new baby home. Before its little paws touch your floors, take it outside and wait...it may take a long while, but eventually it will go potty outside. At that very moment you "throw a party' with praise and/or treats...let your puppy know how happy and proud you are about it going potty outside. Then and only then is your puppy allowed in the house. I agree they should not be allowed to have free run of the house...confine in a crate when you are not actively playing with or holding. Be persistent and patient...they really are very smart and want nothing more then to please. Positive reinforcement, not punishment. Winston was trained to go outside to potty the minute I brought him home, seriously...no accidents. I was expecting the worst and thankfully got the best. Yes, I am so very proud of him and he knows it!!! |
