3 mile walk for 7 lber??? Please don't think this is ignorant, but can a 7 pounder walk a 3 mile walk?? Moose (14 lbs) and I walk 3 miles 3 times a week. We just got Mimi 3 days ago. She is 13 months and 7 lbs. I am wondering how many her size take 3 mile walks? She doesn't go to our vet until Tuesday and I will make sure he gives her the OK (make sure shots are UTD) before I take her out walking. I know 7 lbs is standard....but omgosh....she is tiny compared to Moose! :p |
I don't know the answer to that but i just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS Linda on your new addition to your family. That's so exciting!!!:cheer: |
BTW, when do we get to see a pic of Mimi? |
Basil's a few ounces shy of 6 lbs. and he goes about 2 1/2 miles a day with me 4 or 5 times a week. He'll be 2 in August. I take a bottle of water with us and offer it to him at the halfway point and at the end. I think you'll be fine! |
It's all up to her really. Raja easily did 2 miles when he was her size. He'd probably keep going too if I wasn't ready to pass out on the couch! :D I carry water dispensers for them on our long walks and always on hot days. We have 2 - both work by popping in a standard water bottle and has a little cup for the dogs to drink from. The wonderful thing about our dogs is when they get too tired (mine let me know this by plopping down in the shade and won't budge) they are small enough to be comfortably carried all the way back home. :) |

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...ew-sister.html Here you go Paulette. These are from Wednesday night/just getting her. She was pretty clingy as first. (well still a cuddle bug) So I have finally been getting pictures today! |
Simon is 7 pounds and easily walks 3.5miles with me a few times a week. He loves it :) |

She is totally adorable. What a sweet sweet face. I love the picture of Moosie waiting for her to arrive at the airport. How far did she travel on the plane? She looked a wee bit worn out when she popped her head out of the bag. :) She does look so tiny next to him. They are going to have so much fun together. |

BTW....it is about 5 hrs one way to drive~ |
Hiya Moose and Mimi!!! Hope things are going well for you two siblings :):) Linda, thats' not an ignorant question. I think like any dog or puppy, you should work her up to the 3 miles gradually, after its ok'd by your vet. Especially if you're not sure what kind of excersize she had been used to at the breeders home. If you're going to do the full three miles, I would be prepared to pick her up and carry her at any signs of her getting tired. Sometimes they don't show it, sometimes they do :) Oh, and yes, they can go that far, once used to it. My 6 pounder, Bitsy, can do 3 without a problem, as long as its not real hot out, and as long as I let her stop and "smell" the roses, lol |
So cute...and I LOVE the picture of Moose looking out the window. I take Cooper (who is 4 pounds) on regular hikes. He can go over 3 miles and it amazes my husband and me each time! He's a trouper. |
The pads of any dog is very soft and tender if they have not been walking for very long. I do a 3 miles walk every day, so when a friend ask if I'd watch her Schnauzer for a few days I ask her if he is use to walking and she said her husband walks him every day. Well his pads were comming off like a re-tread by the time we ended our very first walk with him. Walking has to be done gradually. Maybe 1/2 mile for a week, then a little further for a week and so on. The pads need to become calloused. Also be careful that the asphalt isn't too hot for tender pads. ;) |
I think if you just watch her, you will know. If she starts sitting down and acting tired, then it's too much for her. That being said; last March we drove to Cooper's Rock in WV. When we got there, the road was closed, so we decided to walk to the rock. It was 3.2 miles one way! I just knew I would have to carry Tucker, but he walked the whole way. Whenever I tried to pick him up, he would squirm to get down. When we got back to the car, he was out! |
I had Scruff for 8 years and he weighed in at 5.6 lbs and he could out walk a boxer at 55lbs... he lived 15 yrs . Jolie is 6.3 lbs and she can out walk us all... these little dogs love to walk ... bring a water bottle with you just in case . |
when we go away at christmas we walk every morning (usually in the heat, it's Florida) and Layla walks the whole way.. we must go 2 miles easily... we bring water... and sometimes we carry her for a bit but she is ALWAYS ready to walk more! |
I walk tish and teddy everyday They love to walk and explore I think they will walk any distance. We also stop and rest at times taking water and a snack is a good idea:) |
:-) Mine weighs 6 pounds and he is almost 10 months old. We have a dog walk every year here in Austin that is a 5K (3 miles). It was about a month ago now and I wanted Scooter to do it. While he gets regular walks, its not like I really push him with distances much. I was surprised how well he did. There were thousands of dogs (literally) and he had a blast. I do races regularly but this was his first one. He actually pulled me. I didn't want to push him but we ended up running most of it. He had a blast and never looked back. He actually got frustrated when people wouldnt move out of his way. It was so cute. He got a finishers medal and everything. I carried him for the first three blocks because of the see of people and I was afraid someone would accidentally step on him. Once it started to thin out, I put him down and never picked him back up. I think your baby will do great. Just take a water bottle (I used most of the water I had to pour on him to keep him cool because it was starting to get hot out). THe dog walk had dog water stations and baby pools for a quick dip all over which was nice. While he would drink from the bowls they had, he was a true prince and took one look at the dirty baby pools (from the other dogs) and gave me the cutest look. I also took little jerky treats but didn't really need them. He did fine without them. Water is key. Scooter had a blast but came home and slept for two days. I have already signed him up for next year's dog walk. If you have something like that in your area, sign up because your guy will love it. Hope it goes well! |

I am glad to hear so many able to do the walk. When we walk our scheduled walk (with my friend and her two dogs) we walk on the beach and it is not a stroll!! We beat feet!! lol. I have already spoken with my friend and we will just take it slow to begin with and see how it goes. I do have a "skin" babies front pack that I will wear and put Mimi in it if need be! :animal-pa |

I guess.....in my eyes I don't weigh as much as I really do!!!! ;) |
About 3 people that own our puppies are "runners" ... One lady that lives in Ny has one of the smallests i ever had, she is only 2 pounds 14 ounces and she runs with her about 3.5 to 5 miles 4 or 5 times a week, of course when she is tired she gets picked up for a bit.... I read a book that says specifically well trained yorkies can walk or run up to 6 miles per day. I think it depends on the common sense of the owner and training.... i am sure if you take the time to train your dog the right way and if she is healthy and has good legs she will be fine !!!! Do not think that i was not surprized to say the least when i found out about the little peanut running.... but she is almost 4 years old now, very healthy and loves her "run" .... so i guess that is a lesson... they are small , but they want to be a dog !!! |
I think that she will be fine. I bring my baby (5.5 pounds) for about a mile bike ride each day. (flat put running) and by the end of that he is about ready for a nap. but we occaisionally(sp?) walk for a few miles and he is fine just be sure to bring lots of water. |
