Still Marking After Being Neutered? Before Logan was neutered Tuesday, he would pee multiple times when we took our walks. I am guessing this was marking. Even though he is now neutered, he is still peeing multiple times when we go outside to potty. He is 10 months old. Does this sound like he's marking because it's a learned behavior? And if so, how do I now stop it? |
Yes he is marking. Neutering doesn't always stop it if they were doing it before being neutered. If he's not marking inside the house...I personally wouldn't worry about it. If he's marking inside...I'd put a belly band on him. |
If a dog isn't neutered before he is sexually mature neutering will probably not stop it |

It can take about 8 weeks or so for all the hormones in his system to be depleted, so you may not see a decrease in marking behavior until that time is passes. Also, since he is 10 months old and just got neutered, there is a little "learned behavior" there as well. My suggestion is to keep him on leash attached to your belt and be aware of signs he may be ready to mark/potty and at that time march him straight outside and when he starts to "go potty" say "go potty" and he will learn to go on command where you want him to. Don't be discouraged yet. He did just get neutered, and it does take time for the hormones to leave the system, and at that time you "should" see a major decrease in marking. In the mean time, I would also keep him on leash to make sure you take care of any learned behavior at the same time. |
Oops! Didn't see he is only marking outside! I wouldn't worry about it to much outside. However, if you want it to stop, do structured walks with him, working on sitting and staying when you are stopped, and set up a designated potty area on the walk. This area is the only place he is allowed to pee, poo. When you get to the area, let him sniff and pee to his heart's content. Make sure he goes several times to empty his bladder. Then continue on with your walk. If he starts to go mark something during the walk, make a sharp noise with your voice (think Victoria Stilwell in It's Me or The Dog.) and encourage him to keep walking with you! |
my boys were both neutered young and they both mark! Good luck |
The outdoor marking is par for the course with both males and females in my experience. They just want to let the other dogs know that is their hood..:D. As long as logan is not marking in the house then your good to go. He will continue to lift that leg because he already had his time to learn it as the norm for him to do. Smooches to Logan and I am glad that things are coming along nicely for him post neuter. |
