Would it be safe? Would it be safe to get a yorkie out of the penny savers. It says it is 8 weeks old. We haven't called or anything yet because we're not sure iif this is safe. You would go to the house though to meet them and the parents. Do you think that would be alright? |
Go with your gut instincts. Good breeders would not even sell a Yorkie pup that young. There seems to be something very fishy going on. :aimeeyork |
How much are they asking for the puppy? I think that if you go to the house you will get a good sense right away about the people and the environment that the puppy is in. That will be an immediate indication as to whether or not you should pursue it any further. I did the same thing here when I began my search for a puppy....we don't have a penny saver but it was similar. I went to the house and it was rather run-down and the lady that was selling the puppy was a bit "out there" if you know what I mean. She tried to tell me that the puppy was only 4 months old but it was obviously much older and I didn't get a good feeling about it at all. Like the above post says...trust your gut. It may be a good situation and that puppy would be very lucky to get to go to a good home with you. I would give it a shot and see....you'll know if it is right or not. |
Having once bought a dog from a breeder than didn't know what she was doing, I will never do this again. You might save a few bucks up front, but you are much more likely to get a dog with a heredity disease that won't show up until the age of 2 when you are thoroughly in love with the dog. The pain and suffering that your dog will go through because of poor breeding is heartbreaking. Find the best breeder you can; find one who goes by the rules set forth by the YTCA, and your chances of finding a healthy pet will greatly increase. In addition, many of the ads especially in free newspapers, are scams, and will often include an e-mail address, and expect you to pay through wiring money. Never wire money to pay for a pet, you won't see your money again or your pet. |
There are times when family members mate their own dogs. You have to go to the home and visit the family and pups, see the parents then deceide. A co worker has a new Yorkie who's friend mated her dog with her mother's. The litter of 4 is beautiful. Pup checked out fine and the parents have had no health problems. They are not breeder's per say but that does not mean they can't have healthy pups. Mom is going to be spayed. They wanted her to have 1 litter. All are AKC. Make sure you see both parents and your not getting a mix. If I couldn't see both parents I would walk. Good luck, |
Ask them for the vet's number, call and ask if they've been utd with visits and if he has any concerns...My daughter lives in Kona and she couldn't find any yorkies for a companion for her existing yorkie...We rescued one from NY and went through all the vaccinations and send her to my daughter....good luck |
Both of the parents of the pup I bought were beautiful and healthy, but they were closely related and because of this were able to pass a recessive gene to the offspring. They too wanted to have just one litter. Trust me, if this ever happens to you, you too will become an advocate for responsible breeding. I see you are in Hawaii, I know there are some members on YT that live in Hawaii and maybe they could help you find a responsible breeder. |

There is no reason to take a chance on a questionable breeder where there are many highly recommended breeders to choose from. |
Lots of "family" breeders sell their pups in newspapers. Things are different in different parts of the country. people here sell six week old pups every day. Go with your gut regardless of what people may say. If the price is right for your budget and you can go see the parents and how the puppy is kept, then you will be alright. I think some people expect too much from breeders. They expect the breeder to do all the testing and etc and then sell them a puppy for 400-500 dollars. While no one want s to sell a sick puppy and certainly no one wants to buy one, some of the demands a few people are placing on breeders these days is ridiculous. So, again, go with your gut. You are the only one that can make that choice. P.S. mine don't leave until twelve weeks so I don't condone leaving at six or seven weeks but in some regions they do and are fine. |
I want to thank those of you who don't have a problem with people who breed at home. We were going to breed a little later that we are (for family members & friends) but alas we are pregnant. I have never bread before and am not well known, I have 2 yorkies that are not related and they love each other very much. If I wanted to sell them I would expect them to come and see and talk to me, that would be a necessity. I would not ship them and I would also make sure they would go to a good settled home. Does anyone have any kind of questionaire that they use? I would use it for family & friends. If I didn't like their answers my babies would stay with me. Thanks again. |
