bullfrogs Me and My Husband did something really stupid:thumbdown We have a pond in our backyard and My Husband was at the pond store and he got some tadpoles to put in our pond. The guy at the pond store told him they are bullfrog tadpoles. We put them in our pond and then I looked them up and it says they can secret toxins that can poison a dog. Does anyone have experience with these frogs? Can they poison a dog so bad that it dies? I am just so concerned and there is no way for me to remove them now. I could try to catch them once they are frogs. I am so upset |
If the dogs lick the frog they can go frothy at the mouth.. i would be extremely careful of any contact like no contact. I was concerned when my Bear licked a frog I asked on here about it. I got mixed responses. |
Actually, we had a pond, and the frogs would have come anyway -- so it's not that you did anything stupid, you are just aware which is good. You could probably work on training them to stay away from the pond; but I don't know. Our first yorkie got a toad (totally unrelated to the pond) on dry land and we had to wash his mouth out with the hose at the kitchen sink. So you just have to be aware on land and on sea.:) |
We lived on a small lake when I was growing up and had bullfrogs, but never had any problems since they were always skittish and jumped at the slightest noise or approach, they are also h*&%$ on skeeters!;) |
I wish we had frogs in brooklyn... I cant imagine having a frog running aroun my neighborhood. lol sorry that probably sounded really stupid |
I think there is only one bullfrog that is actually toxic.The others...I guess just don't taste good. There has been discussion here about them, but dang if I remember what their actual name is. |
I'm not real sure about bullfrogs, but we have little toads that like to get under the outdoor accent lights. When Samantha was younger she would grab them and endup with a foamy mouth and I'd have to rinse out her mouth but she never got sick or anything.:animal-pa |

Here Chachi....I did a search to keep from going insane. It's called a bufo toad. There are a couple of threads here on those. |
I am not sure about the name of the toxic ones but I do know that my 14 year old Yorkie licked one when we first moved to FL. It was the scariest thing I have ever been through. We let her in from outside and she started foaming at the mouth and convulsing. Then she went blind and was hallucinating and screaming. While we were rushing her to the emergency vet we really thought she would not make it. I have never felt such panic. They said her heart was in arrythmia and if he had gotten there just a little later she wouldn't have made it. They treated her and she was as good as new. I have learned that these particular frogs are mainly out in the morning and at dusk. They are all over here in South Florida so I am always on guard looking for them. I am sure that you do not have this type in your pond and hopefully I didn't scare you to death but I just wanted to throw this warning out here since we were on the subject. |
I found this about bullfrogs vs toads A: I am almost certain that what your dog attacked was a large toad, which emits a very bitter tasting liquid. Bullfrogs do not have this defense mechanism. This liquid can be poisonous to small dogs, but medium and large dogs usually just suffer the bitterness and probably a burning sensation to their mouth. Small dogs should be taken to an emergency vet. Frogs are generally not toxic but toads are. My boys had a blast chasing a tree frog that we took out of my boyfriends pool! They were more afraid of it then going after it. They didnt know what to make of it. And my little Dexter when he was less than a year old, a friend put a small green leaper frog in front of him and he bit it and killed it in a second (I was horrified my 3lb baby killed a frog!!!) and he was fine! I wouldn't worry TOO much! :) |

When I was a kid...the ditch down the street was loaded with tadpoles. So we scooped up dozens and dozens...and my mother (who apparently had lost her mind)...let us put them in an aquarium in her laundry room. Of course...the novety wore off our new pets...we forgot about them. Right up until the day...my mother opened the laundry room door and discovered about 100 frogs all over the place. :eek: |
i know when lacey licked a toad she started to foam at the mouth and gag. i made her drink lots of water and she was fine. we have frogs in the yard because of the pond but i dont think any of the dogs have licked them if they did they to are fine :) |
