Newborn puppies and need help. I have 4 yorkie puppies that are two days old today. They were an accident my new little girl yorkie went in to heat and I didn't know that my boy yorkie had gotten her. Mama did fantastic and is taking care of them like a pro. They are all healthy babies with 2 girls weighing 7 oz each and the boys 8oz each. My questions are 1. When do I get their tails clipped? 2. When do they get their shots? 3. What should I being doing to take care of them? Do I need to bathe or anything? 4. How often should mama be eating? I am feeding her puppy food for the extra nutrition. Basically I am lost and afraid I am going to kill one of them, so I have been just leaving mom to it in. I made her a spot (a large 4X4 cage) that she seems quite content to keep them in. I just change the bedding everyday and keep the sides covered, mainly cause she seems happier with the place cave like and cause I wanted to keep any drafts off them. I have also kept the room a steady 75 degrees. |
Tails and dewclaws should be docked around 3 days of age so they can't feel the pain. As far as shots they won't be due until about 6-8 weeks of again..and every 2-4 weeks after that. Mama should be taking care of them for the most part and i normally just free feed my mommas because of the puppies nursing i don't want to deprive her of anything...hope that helps. BTW welcome to YT...you may get some nasty opinion for what has happen but to me since it has happen there is much we can do but help you along the way. I just hope that this is a lesson learn and you will be doing tons and tons of reading along the way...good luck with your new litter and please post pictures because we love pictures...heheh |
All that is true something else you may want to consider is cottage cheese for mom as it adds calcium and protein. My females ate a cup a day while nursing. Good luck with the puppies. |
Mama is getting spayed. I didn't plan on being an irresponsible breeder and don't plan on ever being again! but like you said. They are here and deserve the best shot they have. I plan on not selling them, but adopting them to responsible homes that will take good care of them when they are old enough to go. Thank you so much for your help. I do really appreciate it. Off to call the vet about getting their tails done tomorrow. |
I am feeding mama cottage cheese, as I think I read that here and remembered it. So at least I got that right! |
This thread needs to be in the breeders section. you'll get more responses there. It's great that mama is doing well with them. Newborns mustn't get chilled so they should have a heating pad (set on low) underneath them (not directly, have a towel over the pad) and they shouldn't have any drafts if you're using a/c. Tails and dewclaws are usually done at 3 to 4 days old and shots should begin around 8 weeks. You need a scale that will measure tenths of an ounce to make sure the babies are gaining weight daily. Keep mom and pups away from the busy area of the house and don't allow the pups to be handled by others. Call your vet and make an appointment to get the tails and dewclaws done. They will look over the pups then to see how they're doing. There is much more but this will get you started. Please post this thread in the breeders section. |

I would love to have one on these puppies if you want to give them to a good home. I would like a playmate for my Mia.. Good luck with everything and you will do fine..:aimeeyork :animal-paMia and Karen:animal-pa |
Hi, it sound like you are doing great with the babies, it is a surprise to get puppies when you are not expecting them, isn't it? It is a shame I'm so far away, but I would love one of your babies, once Max got used to having Cloe over, he misses her terribly. Good luck with the babies and please post pictures. |
just re-read your post and, to answer a couple of your questions.....the babies should not be given a bath at this time and you should feed the mom 3-4 times daily. She may not have had much of an appetite for the last few days, but she will get ravenous as the pups draw more milk from her. Sounds like you're doing a great job so far. Good luck with those babies!! :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
