2nd night not so good Well, I wrote that our first night with Cruiser went really well. The 2nd day did not go so well. We picked him up Thursday night from the breeder. Friday we had a vet appointment. They said he was really healthy and he did great while we were there. He got his vaccines. Three to be exact (distemper, bordatella, and lyme). Then a few hours later he started throwing up and was very lethargic. We called the vet and they said to take him to the emergency hospital and we did. He ended up having to stay for 4 hours. He got a shot for his allergic reaction to the vaccines, then they said he was pale so they gave him some oxygen, then they said his blood sugar was low so he had an IV. Poor lil dude. He's better now, but since then I've been very worried that he is not eating enough. He doesn't seem interested in his dry food at all. I have left it out for him since we brought him home. I hand fed him a few pieces but other than that I don't think he's touched it. The breeder gave us a 2 pound bag of what he's been eating there (NutriSource). She also gave us a Cesar's wet food and said to give him a quarter of it for his first few meals. He didn't eat much on Thursday night but he did polish of a quarter of it on Friday morning. Not all at once, just a nibble here and a nibble there. When I picked him up from the emergency vet on Friday night they gave me a little Prescription Diet can and he did eat all of that between late Friday night and Sunday morning. I tried to buy more yesterday but they said you have to have a prescription so we couldn't. I keep giving him a little of Cesars and then we bought some Science Diet but he just barely nibbles at it. I keep setting him in front of it and he'll eat two or three bites at a time is all. I have been giving him a nibble of braunschweiger as a treat when he goes potty outside and he likes that. He doesn't seem very interested in milk bones. I don't know what to do to get him to eat. I don't want him to have low blood sugar again. I wanted him just to start eating his dry food by this point. What should I do? He sure sleeps a lot. I've never had a puppy so I don't know how much is supposed to sleep but it's by far the biggest activity for him. He likes to be outside though too. He runs around out there. It's so cute how he runs - hopping like a bunny. He doesn't seem too interested in playing with his toys yet. Does that come a bit later? He's doing great with sleeping in the night and going potty outside. He's had a few accidents in the house with pee but I've caught him every time and run him outside. He hasn't pooped inside at all. And outside he only poops in our landscaping rock, not the grass. Fine with us but I'm surprised by it. He likes his kennel. He goes in there by himself sometimes. He just whimpers for a few minutes when it's time to go to bed. When he whimpers in the night I take him out quick and potty and come back in, see if he'll nibble at his food and then back to bed. It's going well if I can just get him to eat a bit more. |
Have you tried giving him some NutriCal? That will help prevent low blood sugar, and puppies love the taste of it! You can get it at most anywhere pet supplies are sold. |
No, I'll try that. Anyone else have any other suggestions? |
I have a baby kong and put kibble in it and my baby liked to roll it around and eat his kibble out of it. I'd also add some honey to his water so he can get some sugar. Sometimes when Ozzy is reluctant to eat his food I add a little Nutrical in it, mix it up and then he eats it :) It's really hot and sometimes that makes them not want to eat as well. Good luck! |
Boil some plain chicken! Lily wouldn't eat much her first night at home, but went to town on the chicken when I got a little desperate. Good luck! |
Please don't give him braunschweiger as a treat. Sausage and other fatty table food is notorious for causing pancreatitis. Pancreatitis (Inflammation) in Dogs |
I won't give him a ton of it, but it's all he seems to like right now and I'm very concerned about hyperglycemia. My aunt and uncle gave their dogs braunschweiger when they were potty training and would still give them some pretty often as adults. Cassie, a lhasa bichon, died last summer at age 16 1/2 and Molly, a lhasa apso, is still alive now at 16 1/2. |
My question is what kind of prescription diet did they give the puppy? was it P/d ? I would have asked the emergency vet why they give this kind of food and if they can right a presription for it since this is the only thing the puppy ate and liked. If it is too rich to keep him on I could understand that but tell them your concerned about him not eating. Also try not to give him too many different foods, this is hard on his digestive tract. I would go back to giving him what the breeder was giving minus the wet food and add a little gerbers baby food ( chicken or turkey puree) only. Do this for a couple of days until his appetite returns. Then slowly wean him on to a better quality food. |
It was a/d. I'm going to try again tonight. If I can't buy it, I'll call the vet for a prescription. If not, I'll try a bunch of different things and see if he'll eat something. |
Please try not to give hime too many different foods. This is very hard on their tummies, and can cause diarrrea, and make him very ill. I understand your concerns about him not eating as well. :animal-pa A call to the vet could help you and give more suggestions. I did give my pup white chicken meat the first day she was with me. She would not eat much either cause she was so stressed out. But, ate the chicken well. :aimeeyork |
I did talk to the vet this morning. She said I may have to try different kinds to see what he likes. She also suggested heating the food in the microwave for 10 seconds. and she suggested some cooked vegetables. I also talked to the breeder this morning. She suggested cooked chicken breast, cooked hamburger, deli turkey, baby food chicken, and mixing some chicken broth with the food. |
I agree..Do not give him too many different things. Stress can cause a puppy to not want to eat..Just make sure you have nutrical around and try the baby food. Call your Vet. They should have re-checked back with you.. knowing that your pup had a reaction. Good luck. Ask the breeder if your puppy has had some hypoglycemic episodes prior..A responsible breeder will tell you the truth..keep his energy low and cuddle alot..make sure he is drinking a lot too. |

I'm sorry your baby isn't feeling well. Is he over the reaction to the vaccines? I agree with trying the boiled skinless chicken. I'm not sure where you are in town, but there are quite a few small pet food shops around here that sell the higher quality kibble and canned food. We've been using Natures Variety kibble and canned with great success, all 5 of my dogs love the variety and the taste. Another thing you might try is to hand feed him the kibble or anything to get him to eat. It's good that you are staying in contact with his breeder and your vet, always the first calls you should make  The nutrical can stimulate them to eat as well. I wouldn't give him the ceasers, this isn't a quality food. |
He's 11 1/2 weeks. He was born March 21. We haven't even taken any pictures of him since we got him home. We need to. He's so cute!!! As soon as we do we'll post them. It's been a hectic few days. Thursday was my birthday and we got him that night. Friday he went to the vet and then had the reaction. Saturday we had a birthday party at our house. Sunday was pretty low key though. Today he is at school with my husband. he's a teacher. The kids' last day was Thursday but the teachers had meetings today. So cruiser is sitting through boring meetings. Tony called and said that he had had Cruiser in his classroom downstairs but he was crying so much that he had to go get him and he's now in the library where the meeting is taking place. I guess he was sleeping quietly though. |
