Changing a dog's name... Is it too traumatic to change an older dog's name? I'm going to be getting a six year old Yorkie, and want to change her name. Do any of you have experience with this? My girlfriend successfully changed a three year old dog's name pretty easiy, but she was a cocker spaniel. I don't want to traumatize the little dog, but would really like to rename her. Opinions? |
We adopted a 2 1/2 year female about a month ago and we changed her name! We did rescue her from a breeder and I'm not totally sure she had or knew her name, but she has learned her new one pretty easily! |
My dogs get a new nickname about once a month, haha. They seem to adjust just fine to their "new name". But a lot of times these nicknames sound a little bit close to their real name... but not always. "Little Imp" sounds nothing like "Epsilon", lol. (My husband calls him that sometimes). I think it's all in the way you say the name. I know I have a special voice when I talk to my babies. I think you could probably train her pretty quick what her new name is too. If she looks at you when you say her name, give her a treat. |
When I adopted my Westie, I did not change her name because I thought she was probably too used to it. She was 6. I don't know if it would have mattered or not, but I decided to keep the name "breezy" even though I never would have named her that myself. |
I think by using the current name and the name you are changing it to at the same time and then drop the first name after awhile would be no problem. Mine come no matter which one I call. |
When we were growing up, we used to "take in" stray dogs all of the time. Since we didn't know their names, they always got new ones. I think they just naturally start responding to whatever you call them. Can't see how it would really traumatize them. I think dogs are just happy to have someone that loves them and giving them attention! Everyone in my family has their own special names to the dogs anyway (you know, honey...sweetie...trouble!) |

I think you should change it if you want to. It's not going to 'traumatize' the dog. |
When we got Silas his name was "Barney" a German Shepherd named Barney  it made no sense to us, he was 2 years old and he answered to Silas after about 3 days. :D |
Thats what I am thinking about doing with Blossom, she is over a year, and her name reminds me of Maggie's so I think I am going to change it to something like Bella, start calling her Bella Blossom, then dropping the Blossom.:) |
I don't think it traumatizes them. I got a poodle when she was 2 and changed it. She was fine. Also, my dogs each have about 47 knicknames and they come to all of them! |
I think it won't be that hard to change the name. They're smart and if you keep repeating the new name over and over, they're going to catch on. Good luck and just be patient:D |
