How to answer the "teacup" question? Hi everyone! I don't have my Yorkie yet, but only about 3 more weeks! (I can't wait...!) But, I have already been showing anyone and everyone pictures of her. And, it annoys me to no end that the first question out of anyone's mouth is "Is it a miniature Yorkie?" or "Is it a teacup Yorkie?" So far, I don't really know how to answer them without it sounding like I'm lecturing! I've mostly just said "she'll probably be around 4-5 lbs." So, how do all of ya'll deal with this?? Thanks! |
I get that all the time w/ Marcel. And I say something like "No, he's just a regular Yorkie who weighs less than some do. There's actually no such thing as a teacup yorkie, but some breeders will try to tell you that in order to charge you more." |
I always say there is no such thing |
I always say there is no such thing as well. Amy |
I have a male that is 3 lbs and I just tell everyone he is just small! |
I just explain there is no such thing, Ive had people try to argue with me about it, then I ask have you ever owned a Yorkie? most say no, and if they do I ask did you buy from a breeder or some pet store. They usually walk away feeling really dumb.:D |

i get asked all the time... I dont really want to sound mean and rude so i just say no shes not... lol |
if someone tells me THEY have a teacup. i say.. oh that's nice.. if they ask if Layla is a tea cup (she is 6 lbs and people STILL ask if she is a teacup!) i say no.. there is no such thing.. it is a term that unresponsible breeders use to charge more for puppies who most of the time come with health complications. That usually shuts people right up :) |
Oh my god I hate that cuz I ppl always ask me that about abby. The crazy thing is that even the ppl who work at my vet's ask me that. I just smile n say no she's just really small LOL. It drives me nuts man |
I'm so glad for this post! We get that all the time and it is annoying! We struggle with it a bit because everyone asks...it gets kind of tiring and we try not to be rude or snooty about it but do feel people should be aware that there is no such thing and to discourage them from seeking after one. The last time we were asked, my husband said, "What do you mean by teacup?" and the guy was just plain rude and said, "when they fit into a teacup!" Neither of ours would fit into a teacup, they are just small, so why did he ask!!!! Grrrrrrr! |
Other end of the scale My yorkie is 8 pounds, give or take, and I get asked all the time: 'is he a pure bred yorkie?' or 'he must be a mix of some sort'. Isn't that rude? I've been told to ask the breeder for some of my money back because of Walkers size and I was just appalled. They come in ALL SHAPES AND SIZES and no matter what size, we love them all. :yorkietal |
If someone asks that is serious about getting a yorkie, I stop and explain. Roxi & Rocco are both very small, but if I stopped to explain to everyone that asked I would never be able to get anything done!! If someone asks just in passing, or to make conversation, I just say no they are just runts of the litter, all yorkies are in the toy breed, no miniatures, no teacups... |

i read somewhere that someone explained tea cup yorkies as "its just a nice way of saying runt yorkie puppy" so maybe you can explain to your friends that tea cups are simply runts and they're not desierable due to their health. then explain how yorkies are toy size meaning they'll most likey be between 5-7ish lbs. i mean i think that's still tiny :P |
