Picking out a new puppy This weekend I am visiting my breeder to pick out a puppy. I have done some reading and know the right questions to ask the breeder, but can't find much information on things to look for when you are actually viewing the pups. Besides the obvious (look at the teeth/gums, skin) what else do you look for when it involves the Yorkie breed? It's going to be hard enough choosing between the most adorable puppies, but any information you have in helping me narrow my choices would be greatly appreciated. THANKS! |
I am sure I have seen a list of questions for a breeder when selecting a puppy. Have you tried a search? I'd start with "breeder questions" and go from there. |
i have read that you shouldnt pick the shyest one or the most active one... you should pick one in the middle, as they are less likely to have behavioral problems later on |
choosing a puppy Not sure of your "must haves".... I encourage buyers to come out to our kennel with an open mind rather than having specifically set on a sex or size since we require alteration by 6 mo anyway..... That said, look for a puppy that responds well to you personally.... You shouldn't be rushed to choose..... I give buyers a chance to stay and play as much as they need or to come back several times to choose the right dog..... Every puppy has a unique personality just like people, so get to know each dog in the litter. Everybody has a bad day, so don't base your choice on the 1st visit unless distance is a factor, then rely on your breeder to really be able to give a good personality analysis of each puppy. That aside, there are some basic kennel and puppy qualities we recommend buyers take a moment to peruse prior to choosing..... read over our link and maybe it will give you some insight... "read over our link and maybe it will give you some insight... " I knew I'd seen a list of questions and things to consider. thanks for posting this. |
I usually pick the one that picks me, the one that respond to your voice and seems to fit you. I think you just know. |
When my mom went to see the puppies , Mingtoy chose her . Mom asked lots of questions , in return , the breeder asked her much questions too . |
Baxter chose me. He came over and sat in my lap and stayed there. He made his presence known. |

Every Yorike that joined my family picked me out. I walk into the breeder with an open mind and a more than open heart. Usually, I'm drawn to one particular Yorkie, and it's the beginning of a beautiful relationship. The world goes out of focus when I first see my love, and all I can see are his/her precious eyes looking up at me saying take me home, feed me, brush me, walk me, care for me, water me, bathe me, take me to the Yorkie park, and, most importantly, love me. |

I love your website. its very well laid out, very clear and informative. your puppies are gorgeous as well. im very impressed! |
I use to use this technique for temperament..roll the pup on his/her back..stroke the tummy. The one who used to play bite my hand or did not like being on his/her back seemed to be the more active/playful/daring one. The one who just layed there and let me tickle and stroke was the more submissive and layed back one..The breeder would later confirm my observations.this is also a good way to look for umbilical hernias..good luck. |
Darcy chose me, Good choice Darcy LOL |
Give yourself time to interact with all of the puppies. Choose the one that best suits your personality and temperment. The puppy who comes to you, and most social . Of course the most healthist of the bunch is very important. :aimeeyork |

It's is so refreshing hearing about Kikyo's personality and how it matches up to our desires. We put our total faith in our breeder in this case Kirista(SET Yorkies). We of course are no where near Texas and really didn't consider a breeder so far away until meeting her. She always explained that she would let us know if the personality of the "ultimate yorkie" we desired, matched to what was breed, regardless of whether male or female. She did exactly that. So now my husband gets his wish. Another sassy female...LOL. Yay! |
