When to start clipping hair on ears? Mac is 12-1/2 weeks old now and his ears do not stand up. When should I consider trimming the hair on his ears? I've never done that sort of thing - do I take him to a groomer to do it? Should I put Dr Scholl's Moleskin on his ears after trimming them? Does the Moleskin pads stick by themselves or do I need an adhesive? Thank you! |
You can go ahead and start trimming the ears. If you're uncomfortable doing it, you may want to use a groomer but it's really pretty easy. We use a beard trimmer on the inside and outside surfaces and use scissors for the edges. The trimmer can catch along the edge and tear the ear so that's why we use the scissors there. Since his ears aren't standing, trim back past the point where they flop. Once they stand, most keep the ears trimmed about 1/3 of the way down. I've had good luck with the moleskin. Just cut a piece to fit the inside of the ear. Make sure you cut it big enough to get beyond the flop. It's easier to use the first one to make a template to cut others out once you get a good fit. The moleskin will stick by itself and with it only being on the inside of the ear, it's harder for the pup to get it off compared to tape. You'll probably want to have someone hold him while you trim because they do tend to squirm. Good luck with the ears standing. I know its hard to wait till they come up. But keep working with them, sometimes it takes awhile. I usually tape them for 3 days and then check to see if they stand. If they flop down by the next day do it again for 3 days. |
I'd take the pup to a groomers the first time and let them do a good ear trimming...then, just pick up where they left off. The extra weight from the hair is weighing down the ears. You may have to tape to get them to stand up...or maybe they'll just do it on their own. Also, I massage the ears. |
One of my Sophie's ears flopped down at about 13 weeks. I bought a small trimmer and shaved them. I didn't try to tape because we have a boxer pup, too, and they play constantly, so it would have been useless. About a week and a half later, the floppy ear popped up and has stayed up. Maybe patience is all you need once you get the weight off of them. It worked for us anyway. |
Great information - thanks all! I will call around to groomers today to see how much it will cost just for ear trimming. I'm sure he's going to squirm... a LOT, so I may get a groomer to do it first time round. When you say to: "massage the ears" - what part to do you mean? The whole ear or just the bottom half or just behind the ears? I read if you touch the tops too much they will never stand up. Thanks everyone. :) |
You massage the whole ear, helps to increase blood flow. I have never taped a pups ears, if you keep them shave and massage they should stand if they are going to. I always shaved ears from the time they were a couple weeks old and never had one with floppy ears |
