My 4 month old yorkie likes to eat poo!!!! Hi everyone! I got my first yorkie and she is soooo adorable!!! Wow, they definetely have great personalities! She is soo curious. Anyhow, the only bad thing is that she likes to eat her poo and my other dog's poo!!! Ewwwwwww Is this normal??? What can I do to stop her? Please help me! Thanks!!! |
LOL bailey (yorkie) used to eat leahs (golden lab) as it was coming out of her. I used to shout at her him to stop LOL i think they just grow out of it. just dont let her lick your face LOL |
Oh, ok I was starting to freak out! Thank you soo much! I hope she grows out of it soon!!!! |
Yah, it is normal!!! THANK GOD Mia didn't do this!!! I could be wrong on this BUT I've heard that mixing a little bit of canned pumpkin in the dogs food will stop your baby from eating their poo. Am I correct? |
This is actually quite common and it called Coprophagia. Some dogs do this because they can smell the undigested protein in the poop. Some people suggest putting unseasoned meat tenderizer in their food because it has an ingredient that breaks protein down so dogs will not find the poop nutritious. Be sure to use the unseasoned variety because seasoned has too much salt. Here's a link with more information. Stopping Dogs From Eating Poop There is also a product sold at pet stores that stops this. |
Thank you soo much for your helpful information! I was getting worried because she ALWAYS has food and eats like a PIG!!! I'm like where does it go??? SHE IS SOO TINY! |
Give her some fresh pineapple each day. It makes the poo VERY unappititazing. ;) |
Interesting! I just called my mom to give her some pineapple is can ok? |
I bought some stuff at the pet store, it really works. Take's about a week or so for it to start working. If you have more thatn one dog, you need to give it to all them. I don't need to use it anymore, (I did for about two months) Once she quit the ugly habbit, she didn't start up again. |

My Cola used to do the same thing. I just watch him every time he's outside. But I have a question, is it normal for them to vomit it right back out within a few hours. |
Aggg! Rambeau will eat any poo that sits still long enough! I havn't had too much trouble with his, but the boys, when it is coming out and the cats, he loves it. I have to clean the cat box as soon as one is laid or I have brownie lips trying to kiss me . . . YUCK! Melissa and Rambeau (yummy poopie!) |

The method of the meat tenderizer didn't work for us but, it might have been the salted variety since it didn't phase them :( What is the name of the product from the pet store that you used? I'd be ready to try that...for the poop-eater :animal36 |
2 of mine are poop eaters and the 2 1/2 year old hasn't grown out of it. Roxie throws up after eating it Pixie doesn't. I bought a tonof forbid from my vet and then someone told me it had wheat gluten in it and Ihave been afraid to use it and Cali is off all wheat products as well. |
What a crapy subject.....:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D sorry couldn't help it... I have had dogs do this too.. Not from my own breeding but dogs I've brought in.... I think it's inherited trate. Some say they are lacking something...But I do feel food enhancers which are in almost all foods are part of the problem... Especially the dog treats but feel they are putting them in all food. As you know yorky's, many are not good eaters.. or finnicky.. I've used forbid before and it works but usually they will grow out of it but don't want them to start in the lst place as it becomes habit... Good luck... |
