New to YT! And I have some questions... We just got a yorkie puppy 1 1/2 weeks ago. When we got the puppy the breeder said she weighed 2lbs at 9 weeks. 3 days after we got her my mom weighed her and she weighed 2.75lbs. Now that she is 11 weeks old she weighs a little over 3 lbs. I feel like my mom's been over feeding her...she keeps the food out all day and she's a eater. I'm not too sure if she's getting fat...but when we got her the breeder said she should grow to be about 5lbs...which I highly doubt...She said the mom is 6lbs and dad is 4lbs. I guess my question is...how big do you think she will get? and is she gaining weight too fast? |
what are you feeding her? like what is the brand of food? if you think she is an "eater" than i would suggest 3-4 small meals during the day instead of free feeding. You should be able to feel her ribs without a layer of cushioning in between the ribs and her skin. and when she is wet you should be able to make out her waist... it should go in a bit. |
OH and welcome to Yorkie talk! |
It's hard to predict the size of any given Yorkie. While the parents are a good indicator, sometimes a puppy can be way smaller or way bigger than it's parents. Your puppy's weight isn't on the weight chart but I'll guess around 7-8lbs. Franklin weighed around 3.5lbs-4lbs at 12 weeks and he's 10.4lbs now at 8 months! She's definitely not gaining weight too fast - puppies grow leaps and bounds in the first few months of life. I honestly believe puppies should be free-fed until around 6 or 7 months of age. Yorkies are too small to withhold food from. I also don't really believe there's anything as a "fat" puppy but I don't really know much about that, I guess. Welcome to YT! :) |
new yorkie owner, also! i am also a new owner!! i need any info possible from anyone...please feel free to send message!!!! |
we've been giving her science diet puppy bites...thats what the breeder told us to feed her. I can kind of feel of ribs. She's getting a bit...thick. She's gained over a pound already in less than 2 weeks. I was hoping she'd stay around 5-6lbs. My mom keeps saying its better that she eats and is healthy than taking away her food and be unhealthy. Every time we get a dog...i swear they are over grown... Also...she's staying with my parents...we are in the process of moving. I've told her she should be eating 1/2 a cup a day. But I'm betting she eats over a cup a day! |

Thanks :) I was thinking of getting her better food. I did some research on the net about science diet and the rating was pretty bad. My mom gives my brothers dog even worse food (Beneful) and warned her to change his food too. I've let my mom know about not leaving the food out, but then she just eats my brothers dog's food. Can't wait til she's at my house so I can monitor her eating. My mom likes to spoil the dogs. |
