Adding a new dog question Next month I am going to be getting a 12 week old Yorkie. What is the best way to introduce them to a 1 yr. old Golden. They are so small and fragile, I need helpful advice on how to do this. My Golden is well socialized and well behaved, but anyone who has been around them know they are full of energy and get very excited. THANKS! |
My advice is to let them meet on neutral grounds - somewhere the golden won't feel like the puppy is intruding. Keep them leashed and slowly introduce them. Maybe take them for a walk? After they are comfortable with each other, bring the puppy into the house. Once in the house, it's important to make sure the "old" dog doesn't feel like it's being replaced by the "new" dog. They will need to work out their pack status on their own and it's likely the puppy will be submissive to the adult. Whatever they decide, you will be able to tell. Make sure you greet the old one first, feed him first, do everything with him first. Also - spend some one on one time with each dog to make sure they are getting individual attention. Take them for outings separately. It's important to make sure each dog develops it's own identity separate from it's pack. (I read a lot about this when we decided to get a second dog). As far as the size issue.. I would let them play but only under very careful supervision. Definitely let them interact but when things get rowdy or you aren't there, keep them separate. Hope this helps! |
Seriously Rambeau was 12 weeks old when we got him, but he was very well socialized with a large family group (his family 25 or so dogs). We brought him home, thrilled and excited but we have two very large ( 100-120 lbs ) chocolate labs who have had bad attitudes toward each other (brothers) but great behavior toward everything else (us, strangers, the cats). We basically set him down and let them all get to know each other with us watching like hawks. The big dogs sniffed and did the classic doggie greeting, then ignored him. To this day with him snapping at their faces, hanging from their lips and stealing their chew chews they growl and that is about it. All labs have a gentle soul I think your baby will be fine if you watch and let them be dogs. Melissa and Rambeau (big silly labs!) |
