Social Pup? Who has a social puppy and who has an anti-social one? I was wondering if the need to leave the puppy at the breeders until 12 weeks for socialization is the same when it is going to a home with other yorkies and/or other dogs? The reason I ask is that Ava came from a small litter of two and her sister was so much bigger than her that the breeder separated them almost as soon as they were weaned, or at least she kept them apart so Ava would not get hurt. Ava is very social, but she is also very independent. She loves to be held and cuddled but she doesn't mind being alone and playing by herself. She doesn't fuss or whine if you put her in her playpen and she loves people and all other animals. She is extremely social but not needy. What is best when it is a small breeder who doesn't have other dogs except the litter of one or two and the parents? |
Cosmo came from a litter of 3 and they were all around the same size. Cosmo was a little bit smaller but they stayed together until they were adopted. Cosmo is a social butterfly. He loves to play with other dogs and has to be around me a lot. He loves when other people come over too. |
Mine generally get all types of socializing. They play with mom, litter mates and later even other adults that I know are puppy tolerant. I also separate them daily for a bit after they are 8 weeks old to learn its ok to also be alone. Sometimes though, you get a pup that is by nature more outgoing or shy no matter what you do. |
My Rowdy was the smallest of a litter of 5 and there were 6 adult dogs, 2 adults and 3 children in the house where he was born. We got him when he was 8 weeks old and he is extremely social to both humans and other animals. But he doesn't mind playing alone either. We keep him in the den/office part of the house which is shut off from the other part and sometimes he is out there with us and sometimes with the 12 year old schnauzer and sometimes he is out there alone. Sometimes he is in his pen and sometimes he has free roam - but he doesn't seem to mind or whine or anything when he is alone. So I'd have to say he is very social but doesn't mind being alone. He is not at all dominant with us or the other dogs - he is always the submissive one. |

What is anti-social? My two little ones are not as friendly as the other 3. They are definately wary of kids. They don't struggle to get away from them but you can see they only tolerate being held by children. As soon as the grip is loosened they are gone. They don't have a problem with adults but are a little standoffish with strangers. I know I haven't socialized them enough but it also seems to be something in their personalities or genetic make up. |
