Home Alone! Hi all, my little Mickiey is 9 weeks old, I got him a week ago and decided to take off from work to spend all of my time with him. He had kennel cough when I got him and still does therefore he has not had any of his vaccines yet. However eventually I will have to return to my regular life and leave him alone for a few hours a day. Any advice at what age or after how long I can leave my baby home alone? should I put him in a crate or let him run around the apartment? is there a process to let him get used to being alone? He is sooo little and I feel bad for him =[ .. any advice? :aimeeyork |
Hi There. Welcome to YT. I would invest in an xpen and leave him in it for gradually increasing periods of time. As long as he has his bed, food, water, pee pads and a few toys he'll be fine. They'll break your heart when you leave but they do just fine and they are so happy when you return!! I started leaving my Baby at 11 weeks of age for 4 hours then I'd come home for lunch. Now He stays home in his pen twice a week all day by himself and is just fine. Good luck. I'm sure others with have all kinds of great advice for you. |
'HI' AND 'WELCOME' TO YT !!! TRUST ME ... ONCE THEY (:aimeeyork) TOOK OVER YOUR HEART ... YOU WILL TAKE THEM ANYWHERE WITH YOU .... ;) |
thank you guys. he already did take over my heart that's why I can't imagine leaving him alone but I will have to go back to work in about four weeks. :( And as for the xpen, I'm not really sure what that is. Do I put his bed, toys and food inside of it? or you mean as long as he has those in general he'll be fine? Thanks again!! |

wow, I have never heard of these exercise pens but they look great! I just checked it out online and they seem extremely convenient and comfortable for the dog. much much much better than a crate. I will buy him an xpen immediately lol. Great idea, thank you sooo much!! |
hi we too both work and have to leave our furby, she is now six months old, the first two weeks were the worst, i could hear her cry before i got to the outside gate !! i think the crying lasted 2 weeks , she now lays on her bed ready for me to leave, we leave the radio on for her plus chews and her toys, its all a matter of routine I think she sleeps most of the day !! |
was she very little when you started leaving her alone? |
We started leaving Franklin home alone immediately. Only in little intervals at first, but we started around 13 weeks. |
Just a thought but why not check into a pet sitter. I have a business in PA but most of us will stop in and check on your baby, clean out dishes and pen, walk them and love them for anywhere from 1/2 hour or an hour visit so it breaks up the day and saves the cost of a doggie daycare. It's defnately worth it plus it gives you a piece of mind...PLUS...if you need to go away you already have someone your baby is familiar with that can care for him. Check into it. You can go to Care.com and do a search by zip code and see who may be available in your area, I hope this helps. |
I just got my boy Kingston yesterday and once he settles in he can go to work with me but rate now he stays at home in an xpen with a crate untill his second set of shots. Today I left him for 3 hours and then came at spent 2 hours with him then had to go back to work for 2 hours and he did great. It is the first time I have ever left a dog in a xpen and it worked well and Kingston did not seem to mind so I would definitely suggest this option. |
I can't take my dog out yet because he hasn't had his shots due to kennel cough. And I am very glad to hear that you guys started leaving your puppies alone from the very beginning, that means I can too. Another question, what size xpen do you guys use? :aimeeyork |
we ha to leave our girl alone straight awat at 8 weeks old. we dont have a crate or pen, we shut her in the kitchen which led to the utility, enough exercise space, to wonder about but not big enough to be naughty in. now she is older she is allowed the living room also, which is kinny-proofed !! |
My xpen is the one with 8 24inch sections and I think it is plenty big enough. |
This is the one we have: Walmart.com: North State - Superyard XT Portable Playard and Gate: Gear The dimensions are different because you can change it around however you want but it's pretty big.. definitely big enough. |
