Should I get a yorkie? I am about to graduate college and I'm going to be teaching in the fall. I'm also going to be getting married sometime after August and I am thinking of getting a yorkie around that time. Now once I start teaching I'll be gone for at least 8 hours a day. I have wanted a yorkie for many years now but I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to get one considering that I'll be working. I don't want to be unfair to the yorkie. |
ummm.. i think its a personal decision really. you would need to get him/her soon in my opinion though because you would want to try and get them house broken as soon as possible. you cant expect a baby to hold it for 8 hours. you may have to go home on your lunch break to take him/her out......its a big responsibility....plus a puppy takes up a lot of attention maybe you would want to be alone with your husband at first? i dont know..just thinking from all angles! good luck!!! |
I taught elementary school for 10 years and that was after 1 1/2 years of substituting first.....and for me, there is no way that I could have had anytime for a puppy. I was in my classroom non-stop. I would stay late and be there on the weekends. You could take your pup with you on the weekends. :)I don't know what you are teaching or how demanding your schedule will be but it may not be the right time to take on a puppy. You may want to get used to your new schedule and then decide if you have enough time to allow for a new puppy. Believe me, I would love to encourage you to get a yorkie but if your teaching demands are anything like mine were, it may not be the right time. Just something to think about. |
I think if you do decide to get one, you should get 2. I would hate for your baby to be lonely for that long. |
I think its important to remember that Yorkie are very small dogs. Small breeds often get Hypoglycemia due to stress or not eating regulary. They need to eat and drink often for at least the first 12 weeks. The smaller the Yorkie the higher risk of Hypoglycemia. I am lucky, because I was able to bring mine to work everyday. I'm not sure what your situation is, but a small dog left alone as a pup is not ideal. But if you want a Yorkie bad enough, you will find a way to make it work  Good luck in your decision! :aimeeyork |
I think it'd be best to wait and get a dog next summer when you can devote more time to spending time with her. Good luck! |
Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. I would wait. I waited nearly 12 years for my first and originally wanted to wait until my youngest was at least in middle or high school. I think with starting teaching, getting married is a load in itself..then comes baby in the baby carriage....:idontknow I would give it a few years...just to get settled in with your new life, career....it'll go fast! JMO I think I can speak for each and every yorkie owner...you will be miserable having to leave the baby especially if you were to get one so close to school starting up. |
I think a lot of people work an 8 hour day and have Yorkies, I was 17 when I got Duke. When I started going to school part time and working full time, he had my parents to keep him company. Now I go to school full time and don't work. They love attention so once your done for the day with work, you would have to be sure to pay plenty of attention to him/her. |
