for those that think about using collars
 

I'm really scared to post this, but decided I would rather warn anyone about "entertaining" the idea of using "any" collar (including those small kitten collars). First off let me say that yes I knew better than to do it- I have saw it on here countless times. My boys are out of school (they are older, 11 & above) & my dh husband comes home tues & we will hopefully start moving on wed so there are boxes & stuff literally everywhere so I put a small kitten collar w/a bell on it on Regan, she was running around the den & I was watching her while I was on the computer (usually she just sit's w/her little bone & chews on it, it's really a cet dental stick but shh we aren't telling her that:) when the phone rang which was my son who I was upset w/at the time I didn't even think I put her in her x-pen while I dealt w/him & I'm talking not even five minutes I hung up the phone & RAN to the pen & in that fast a time it had gotten caught & stuck in her mouth she was wiggling & I was crying cause I couldn't get her still enough to get it & I screamed at my youngest son to get the scissors & I guess I scared her cause she was still enough for a sec for me to get it unlatched. I promptly put it in the trash & I will NEVER EVER put another collar on her again. So I am a believer, even the tiniest smallest could possible be a death trap! No Excuses for me again!

OMG! I'm so glad your little one is ok...shows you how quickly it can happen..I will NEVER put a collar on Pixie..even if she only wore it when i was around...I know alot of people love them for decorative purposes only, some like to hang pretty charms and I.D discs etc.. but is it really worth the risk? I am currently looking for a pretty crystal charm to hang from Pixie's harness.;)

Morgan has a few collars that are fitted properly. i never once had a problem with them. the collar should be tight against the neck so that it can't get into the mouth. you should be able to fit a finger underneath it so that its not too tight.

i'm sorry yours got her collar stuck but it seems that the collar was too big on her if that happened.

I agree. I think the collar was just too loose. If you can stick more than one finger between the collar and neck, it's too big. I only use collars when I'm concerned there is a slight possibility of him getting out. That way he has ID. (like people constantly coming in and out, or giving him access to our little porch on our apt. Even though it's all blocked off, I get a little nervous).

there are really nice vest type velcro harnesses at walmart for seven dollars.
they look like vests... safe and comfy:)

wow...bella wears a collar! it is tight against her neck though and she has been wearing it for over a year and a half no problems.....i will have to keep an eye on her....thanks for the story

I had a horrible scare with Onni yesterday choking on beef jerky; so I know how horrible it is to see your little fur baby in distress and how FAST something can happen.

Although some people claim that collars are dangerous, properly fitted and used, collars are no more likely to cause injury or harm than any other type of collar or head halter. I normally use the finger measurements and TG I been ok, the only problem I once had was with Koda always destroying the tags!

actually, it was the smallest kitten collar & it was made of the stretchy material so I had thought it would keep from getting caught but thanks for you sharing your knowledge, I was as well....

I am so glad you were there, and were able to intervene. I do not want to use collars on Suzi ever. SHe will use a harness, it is much safer on the smaller dogs . I am glad our little dog is safe and was not hurt.:aimeeyork

Thanks for the post. I have a kitten collar on Mason and am going right now to take it off. I see what you mean about the stretchy material. It is tight on his neck but when you pull it, it can stretch. Thanks for the heads up !!!:)
