Esme's Leg- Is this common? The other day, we were playing fetch in the house. Esme ran to get her toy and then on her way back to me, her right back leg gave out. She fell and started crying out. I was SOOO scared. I picked her up and she instantly stopped crying. When I put her back on the floor she was limping. I massaged her leg for a bit and the limping got better but didn't go away until later in the day. Since then, this has same thing has happened about twice on other occasions. What could this be? She is walking perfectly fine right now. Should she see a vet? Is it a leg cramp? Are leg problems common in yorkies? Is is only 9 months old. Thanks for any info! |
What kind of floor was she running on?? Memphis and Recon have both done something similar to this when they lost traction on the hardwood floor and on the linoleum. Then one time Memphis did the same thing when he got his little toe nail caught in my grammas carpet. |

Hmmm....... my dogs dont always do it either just sometimes. Hard to really say what it is if it only happens sometimes. I hope it is nothing serious. Good luck. :) |
Has your vet checked Esme for knee problems? I know that is quite common in yorkies. My uncle's yorkie had to have minor surgery on one or two of his knees, but of course he is fine now. I can't recall of Sully ever having this problem. I mean he still might have knee problems one day, I hope not, but my uncle's yorkie (of no relation to Sully) was 6yrs old when he had to have his surgery. This may not be a knee problem at all, though....I know I'm not much help :( I sure hope it's nothing! Sully sends Esme puppy kisses! :p |
POOR little girl - it sounds like LP (Luxating patella) ...but...She may have pulled a muscle or twisted her leg........ I AM NO EXPERT but have read many stories about LP - There's varying degrees of LP - and you NEED to speak with your vet and have her looked at. It's pretty common in small breeds.... This link speaks plain simple terms about the degrees of LP in a dog - there are many sites you could look at if you think she may have it - http://www.vetinfo.com/dpatella.html...llas%20grading I hope she feels better...Good luck |

The vet has never checked Esme's knees and I never thought of it before because I thought she was too young to have knee problems... I guess I should take her in though and have him look at her. I did run into a couple at Einstein Bagals once and they told me about their yorkie and a VERY expensive knee surgery. Their girl was older though... I would pay for anything Esme needed, but geez, I hope she doesn't need surgery! |

Hugs to you and Esme... Quote:
When I took Sophie in for her checkup...that was one of the things the vet did was check her knees...but then I've heard thats not a good judge because it was too early...she was 11wks... *** I had a good friend who's toy poodle had it. He would run to get a ball and then yelp and skip a bit...and then be o.k. He had surgery on both knees and is no..."Perfect"...He is 4 yrs. old now. It was expensive surgery to have both knees done..but what a change for him. Let us know how Esme is if you take her in... Sophie sends Esme a Yorkie Hugs and Kisses!! ;) |
It is very possible it could be legg perthes.. this is a problem in the hip joint and will require surgery to repair.. I would watch her closely and if she limps on and off over the next few weeks it would be a good idea to have her hips x-rayed. I hope its only a sprain tho. |
OMG, that is so scary!! You definitely need to have the vet check her for Luxating patella AND Legg-Calvin-Perthes disease. Sounds like she definitely has something going on there..Give her Yorkie hugs and kisses from Rini's cuties.. |
Poor little Esme! I'll say a prayer that it isn't something that will require surgery! Maddie sends kisses and concern to Esme! |
