Danger of rawhide bones I had heard stories of dogs choking on raw hide bones, but didn't think my dog was in danger because I throw them away when they start to get small. I learned my lesson last night. I was asleep and heard Pippin making a funny sound. I called him over and he had a rawhide bone about the size of a golf ball in his mouth. I went to take it away so he'd quit chewing and go to sleep. Well, when I pulled it out more kept coming. The end of the bone had unraveled and still attached was a piece about 5 inches long that had been down his throat. You know how they swell up when they are wet. If I hadn't taken it out he would have suffocated. It taught me a lesson. I got up and threw away any rawhide bones in the house. I can't believe how close I came to losing my precious baby. After that experience I don't know why they even make them. Please protect your babies and don't give them any rawhide bones, no matter how big they are. |
I threw away all their rawhides awhile ago and now I only give them hooves. Every now and then I am tempted to buy theam rawhides. I won't now. Thanks for the reminder and I am so glad you caught it in time. |
I had bought them hoofs but they don't like them the way the like the rawhide. I'll have to take a picture of the piece he almost chocked on. You would never believe he could have swallowed that long of piece. |
That is so scary. |
Thank you for sharing that very very scary story. Many think "itw on't happen to me" wheni t comes to raw hide but you just cna't be too careful! I would suggest not giving your dog any animal product like cow hooves or pig ears or bully sticks. A member on here (Diggy4) had a very scary experience with bully sticks. Since the dogs chew on them and then leave them for a while, bacteria grows on them and she almost lost her little girl due to this. Please stick with non-edible chew toys or those that are eaten in one sitting. |
OMG,, I am glad you heard him and wow.. what kind were you letting him have.. thanks for sharing your story with us..anne |
That's scary. I gave Teddy a pig ear once when i put him in his crate while i went to go grocery shopping. When i returned, there was blood all over the floor and in his crate-my heart rate shot up sky high and i searched Ted's mouth. i couldnt find a cut or loose tooth--nothing! im assuming he cut a gum or his cheek, but he wouldnt let me get a good look. I'm afraid now to give him pig ears anymore. |
What Bones Work??? My 5 month old girl Ella loves Rawhides and Greenies...which are both bad for them. What bones can I feed that she'll love just as much and will keep her chewing drive just as occupied. There's gotta be a good alternative???? |

Look for anything that says 100% digestible. Joey loves Merrick's Bully Sticks, be sure to buy the Merrick brand or at least a brand that you know for sure is made in the USA. There have been several companies using the bully stick name and the product is imported from China, which as you probably know, doesn't have that quality control issue down pat yet. I found it hard to find Bully Sticks locally, although some say Merricks makes a product called Flossies that you can buy locally. I got mine through E-bay, but you can do a google and find them many places. |

Rawhide bone is a manmade product made from an animals hide; its shaped to look like a bone, and it is not 100% digestible. Millions of dogs have chewed on them with no problems, but in a small percentage of cases they have been shown to cause intestinal blockage, so vets no longer recommend them. Real bones, such as you described, have had mixed reviews, and from what I gather, as long as they are not cooked, they are still considered safe. These too should be used with supervision. You might want to read more in the Yorkie Heath and Diet forum for more information on this. |

Great Suggestion... Thanks for suggesting Merrick's. I appreciate the help. It's just hard to find something that's digestible, but also lasts a long time...:animal36 |
