Registration: AKC or CKC, What's the difference? I was just wondering if anyone knows what the difference is, between the AKC and the CKC. I've heard of the AKC and I know it's been around since 1884 which gives them prestige. As for the CKC, I've never heard of it. THANKS to anyone with any insight!:) |
Do you mean Continental or Canadian Kennel club? Canadian Kennel Club is much like AKC being well known and trusted. the other is an "alternative" registry and for the most part a bogus one at that. alot of these "alternative" registries were started when puppy mills did not want to deal with AKc inspections and regulations. Also, its a registry that alot of breeders that have lost their breeding rights with AKC turn too as well. and I suppose that any breeder that doesnt want to be bothered by AKC inspections and the much stricter rules use the "alternative" registries also. Some people just have a problem with akC and say the fees are too high so they also leave AKC. |
The AKC will only register purebred dogs, and it's the only registry that has inspections. As far as I'm concerned the other registries are worthless since they will register anything without any proof whatsoever. |

I don't really get the limit reg thing. Why not give no reg at all? LOL... I know it's to prove that the dog is purebred and show lineage but you could always just get a copy or look at the sires/dams AKC papers/pedigree. I think CKC could be a good alternate for people who aren't going to breed and just want papers... It's cheaper. Aslong as you know your dog is purebred, it shouldn't matter. IMO |
i have a question to add to this thread. hope the original poster doesn't mind. to have a puppy registered under akc or ckc does the breeder have to register it or can you register it when you buy the dog (if its not already registered) |

The "limited registry" is used by good breeders, who believe that they are responsible for all dogs that their dogs produce; and this includes the offspring of those dogs. They are protecting the dogs from becoming breeding machines. Some people have gotten around this by breeding the dogs anyway, and although the puppies wouldn't be eligible for AKC membership they just register them with another registry. This is stealing I believe, when a breeders has worked for years to develop a healthy beautiful dog, and then someone comes around and essentially steals the "patent". When you buy a product you do not have the right to reproduce the product and sell it as your own invention. This is one of the ways, I believe, that enables you to select a good breeder, because bad breeders don't really care what happens to the pups after leaving the premises. By the way, some breeders are turning away from limited registration and spaying the dogs before they leave home. |

Regarding the AKC, the breeder registers the litter, and then you register the puppy in your name. The breeder gives you the paper work to do this. One of the reasons I encourage people to register their dogs with the AKC is that it keeps breeders honest. Many breeders will tell you that the puppies are AKC illegible, but buyers don't find out this is not true until they try to register. If a breeder is telling you that it's so expensive for you –BEWARE- it's less than $20.00 for a buyer, and he probably doesn't have the proof he needs, or he may be producing enough puppies per year that would require an inspection. Even if you aren't planning to breed or show your dog your registration fee helps support the AKC inspection, and this will help eliminate some of the poorer breeders. So it's not just about the dog you are buying, but all dogs. Regarding the CKC, I don't understand why you would register, what are you supporting? |
Continental Kennel Club is an alternative registry that does have looser rules than AKC. There are, however, both high and low quality dogs in both registries. Registry alone does not guarantee a better dog or better breeder but the best ones will be AKC and all show dogs will be either AKC or Canadian Kennel Club. Many AKC dogs have been registered with CKC (Continental) due to the breeder's suspension by AKC. If you look in the breeders' forum, you'll see the AKC suspension list. Most breeders have been suspended due to lack of adequate record keeping , though some have committed worse offenses. As far as registering puppies go, CKC (Continental) will register the litter by phone if the parents are already registered with them. This is really not much different than AKC doing the same thing on-line. If all you're looking for is a pet, you may find what you're looking for with either registry as long as you use the same criteria in selecting a breeder. There are both good and bad breeders associated with both registries. If you are looking for a breeding dog, I'd say go with an AKC one but still do your research in finding a breeder. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |

Limited registry means that only the dog you purchase is registered, none of the puppies that it produces will be allowed to register through AKC. In other words, there are no breeding rights given when purchased, and the pet is to be used as a pet, not as a little money maker. |
