My girls grew up with a yorkie. They knew at a very early age that they had to be gentle with the dog, and they could not pick the dog up...period! They could (when they were old enough to be gentle) sit on the floor or the couch with the dog in their lap. If you teach them those rules...you will not have any problems. They can still play with the dog and cuddle with him. The kids I worried about (and worry about now with our new puppy) were other peoples kids. If I am not *sure visiting kids will follow the rules, then the dog gets put up away from the visitors...usually in my room with the door closed. I also do this if there are a lot of people (adults or kids) over. Find another vet...one who will support you by *teaching you and your kids how to be safe with your new puppy...not one who talks down to you. |
... well we have a small Yorkie and a kid and it could not be better .... as a mater of fact we (the adults) hurt our Puppy (by accident - Hubby dropped something and Maya ate it) and not my child ..... There best Friends and in MY opinion .... if you 'train' the kids right there wont be an issue with the dog .... ;) EDIT: My piont in this is ... accidents can happen to Adults as much as kids .... |
Hi, Your vet was trying to be frank with you. She has seen accidents happen with these tiny, fragile dogs. And needed to inform you as a professional about the dangers. What I have researched is that the yorkie breed is not good to have with very yong children under the age of 8. Little kids are unpredictable at times and not thinking that a pup. can get hurt easily. Here is my opinion. It depends on the child. Not all children are hyperactive, and play rough. Children can be taught ! Children are not dumb, and want tp please their parents, and do the right thing! SO teach your 6 yr. old how to hold your puppy, and play with the pup. gently .Set rules down for your child , and be consistent .:aimeeyork I would always supervise the two of them together, and not let any of his friends grab, pull, and hold the puppy. Don't be discouraged about the vet visit .It is her duty to inform you . I have seen little kids rough with animals... I have seen little kids very good with them too. Use your better judgement. You know your son, and can decide if he is able to be gentle with the new puppy. :aimeeyork |
