Scared What can I do so my precious Kiaya won't get killed? My husband had the bright idea to get a Dobie and he is 5 wks old and she is 2 months old. The problem is my Kiaya is not afraid of him she goes crazy playing with him. After so much of it she won't quit and he growls at her and holds her down and I am afraid of he is going to hurt her. My husband says they are just playing (maybe so) but I don't want to take any chances. What can I do to get her to calm down? I am on pins and needles here please help. Thanks |
I would never leave them alone for starters, and correct the Dobie every time he growls at her. I have big dogs also and my little Onni is never left alone with them. My Jack Russell (the smallest of my 4 other dogs) was the most rambuntious with her and we made him submit by rolling over on his side any time he growled or acted like he was going to be rough. It seems to have worked, he plays very gentle with her now (under strict supervison from Mom and Dad) I do not even allow her to be around the big dogs unless me or my husband is in the room. She is not aloud around the big dogs with my kids. Even when Onni is grown she will still be highly supervised around our other dogs. I think it just comes with the territory of having a Yorky. |
I agree with Onni, never leave them alone now - and possibly ever. When we got Marcel - he weighed 1.4 pounds at 4mths old - Wylie weighed 7.5 lbs - and we could not even leave them alone until Marcel was about 8 mths old. You really do have to be VERY careful. One wrong move - or a fall off of a couch, and something bad could happen. What are their weights and projected weights? |
My Pommie, Snowboy, is 3 lbs. heavier than Chipper who weighs 4.5 lbs. I never allow them to play without my supervision. Snowboy could easily hurt Chipper without meaning to. I also always kennel them separately when I leave the house. Too much of a risk. |

Bailey is 7.9lbs (yorkie) and leah is HUGE lol dunno how much she weighs but she is a big lab. Bailey often ''beats'' leah up. Leah is sooo careful with bailey but sometimes i have to tell them off if they are getting over excited. i never leave them in the same room together if we are out the house and i make sure me or my partner are there if they wanna have a play. If the Dobie growls at the yorkie i would defo make sure u nip that in the bud right away and NEVER leave them alone together. Good luck and congrats on your 2 furbabies :D |
I have a 20 lb schnauzer who can easily get a little rough with my 3 lb Epsilon. If things look like they are beginning to get out of control I tell her to "be nice" and she calms down. We also do this thing with her where we put her on her back while they are playing and say "let Epsilon win!" and she'll stay on her back and play that way so she's much more gentle. It's actually pretty cute :D |
The dobie was WAY to young to be taken from mom and littermates. You will have to be extra careful with him around your yorkie. Pups taken before 8 weeks of age do not learn critical life lessons like bite inhibition. This means that they do not know how hard they are biting and what kind of damage they are doing. Supervise their play. Get the Dobie well socialized with pups his age (after vaccinations, of course) to let him learn skills needed. Unfortunately many times a pup taken that early will have severe behavioral issues later. Whoever gave him up that early needs to be educated about proper breeding and raising of puppies. It's very disturbing to me. |
