She is breaking my heart For about the past month Layla seems to be scared of us... but only at home. She cowers away, tail and ears down when we go near her... she won't take a treat out of our hand.. she seems to scared... today when i fed her.. she has to sit and wait until i say "ok".. she started to get up and i said.. ah ah Layla and put my hand in front of her to signal "stay" and she backed away like she was expecting me to hit her. I almost cried. I breaks my heart that she think I would do that to her. But this only happens at home. When she is at work with us she will take treats and comes up to us. I don't know what to do . I know i've posted about this before but it seems to have just gotten worse and other than to say my heart breaks i don't know how else to discribe how i am feeling. Any suggestions? |
How old is she? |

Thats so weird! Is she a rescue or has she lived with you from the beginning? Is there a chance anyone in your home is bothering her? Any kids? Sometimes kids tease dogs...I have some ideas to help...but I want to know the answers to those ?? first. |

Maybe she wants to be socialized with other doggies. |
Well, do not want to say anything wrong about it. When did you last time do a Rabie shot for her? I would advise you to check with your vet about it. |

The main thing is everyone around her needs to be positive and social. If there is a lot of fighting or tension, she senses it and is affected. Sign up for an obedience class and find a dog park or meetup group for small dogs. Socialization with other pups will help. Also, since she is less shy when she isn't home, getting her out and about where she may be more comfortable and making positive associations with you and herself will help her at home. Does she sleep with people or alone? How does she act around other dogs? Do you walk her outside or carry her outside? |

There is no tension in our house. We are all fairly happy people and there is never any fighting. If anything there is more tension at work :p Layla sleeps in her crate (which she loves) next to my bed. She LOVES other dogs... she cries on our way to her sitters house because she can't get in the door fast enough :p Her sitter has a lab and a labradoodle all the time and occassionaly another lab there sometimes. Layla only walks outside unless we are going in somewhere (ie.. we went to Michaels today and I carried her in there). |
You know, my Wookie does this to me sometimes. Every night, he would sneak and try to snuggle with me in bed, then when I notice him and tell him come to bed, he immediately runs down and runs to his dad in his office. He only does this at night or when his dad is home. I call him but he turns around and runs to his dad. When Wookie does this, I would tell hubby to "tell, Wookie to go to me" so he would say, "Wookie, go to momma" and he would come to me with his tail between his legs. Then I would kiss him and he runs back to his dad. Perhaps your Layla is playing favorites when she's at home. Does she do this type of behavior to both of your parents? |
Maybe something is happening at the sitters' house. You never know what people do behind closed doors. Does she shake or whimper when you take her there? Mine used to shake when we got to the groomers....I now do my own grooming. I hope you can figure it out....poor baby. :( |

So it sounds like your brilliant little angel needs more training! Since she did so well with training and loves other dogs, it sounds like your little lady needs a job. How about formal obedience, like with a local obedience club? These are everywhere, just do a search online. Then, it sounds like she would be the perfect candidate for obedience competition. Start with going over all her training each day outside...Lots of rewards and praise...Build that into her structure. What about walks? There is no chance anything traumatic happened at the baby sitters, right? |
