Question re staying after spay Roxie goes in next Tuesday for spaying and baby teeth pulled and microchipping, Pixie is going in at the same time for dental, I called the vet today to tell them that I wanted her baby teeth removed and microchipped as I forgot to mention it. I also told the girl I wanted to take Roxie home after her spay and not leave her over night. I had a message when I got home from the vet's office saying that they talked to my vet and she said that only if Roxie is doing ok will she consider her coming home that day and I would have to sign a waiver. Now I love my vets, but if she isn't doing well I certainly don't want her staying overnight where there is no one there. I live 5 minutes from the state of the art ER vet and would be able to get her in if any problems come up. Also, if she isn't doing well enough to come home then I want her transferred to the 24 hour er to watch her. Am I being unreasonable? Do your vets let you take them home the same day as the spay? Cali was spayed at the er clinic and had to stay due to complications so it has been 11 years since I have had a puppy spayed and I know I brought Maya home the same day. Thanks |
I don't think your being unreasonable. Are you taking her to Grayslake? |
I dont blame you....I wouldnt want my baby staying overnight unwatched right after surgery. there are alot of members on here that refused to let them stay overnight and either they didnt use the vet or the vet finally agreed to letting them go home. Good luck!! |
When I took Oscar for his neuter, they wanted to keep him overnight, and I explained to them that I would prefer to have him home with me, where he would be much more comfortable and happy. I pointed out to them that it made no sense for him to be there with no vets there through the night, whereas I would be home with him and able to watch him. They agreed, and I took him home at the end of the day. A different vet did the same thing with Ruthie - wanted to keep her, but again, I took her home. Both dogs were perfectly fine. Put your foot down - it's YOUR dog, tell them you'll sign whatever waivers they want, but she's going home with you. If anything, have them do the surgery as early as possible in the morning so that you can pick her up at the end of the day before they close. That should give her plenty of time to wake up and for them to get a feel for her status. Good luck! |
I agree with you a 100% but I'm wondering if there are liability issues? If you take her home and she doesn't do well, they might try to claim that it is your responsisbility... |
I had to sign a waiver for both of mine to come home the same day as surgery. I didn't want to leave them tho' because no one is there at night if something went wrong. |
I did not ask when Tink would be able to come home..... I was told..... Please bring her in for 9.30am and she will ready to pick up 4pm ish, the same day. Thank goodness, as I know she and us will not rest until she is home. |
No, you are reasonable one. Tell them what you want. You pay them! Right? I took mine home same day. Some vets want to keep them overnight for the simple reason that they might do the spay, etc. later in the day. |
When Lexie got spayed she stayed overnight but it was an emergency vet clinic and the on call vet was in the same room with her all night. I wouldn't have let her stay if she'd been left there alone. |

Thanks I am going to either take her home or transfer her to the 24 hour vet if she is not ready. |
This subject frustrates me a little bit because I am starting to see that there are soooooooo many vets that keep them overnight unsupervised. She is your dog and this is your decision. Yes, there is a risk if you bring her home but there is an even bigger risk if she is there alone. Ellie was spayed and had a liver biopsy and didn't get out of surgery til after 3PM. She could've come home at 6PM but I left her there til about 7:30 just so she could be watched by them. Now this is a 24 hour vet hospital that has a vet and one or two techs there the entire time. So they could have requested that Ellie stay and I would've let her but they don't feel it is necessary. The reasoning is that some dogs won't be allowed to rest if you bring them home and some owners just don't care about post operative care. If something happens at home that night the vet might be liable. What these vets aren't thinking about is that they will also be liable if something happens when the animal is unsupervised... Some things you could bring up to your vet are: -If she isn't coming out of anesthesia properly (too slow...), who will be there to catch it? -If she is in pain who will help/medicate her? -If she has her IV in, what if she rips it out? -If she does NOT have an IV in how do we know she won't go hypoglycemic (since she won't have eaten all day)? -If she gets to her incision through her e-collar (not unheard of), what if she rips her incision open? There is no good reason to leave her alone. |
Unless there is someone there monitoring the animals overnight...I wouldn't leave mine. None of mine stayed the night at the vet's office afterward. Mine were done in the am...and they stayed there until 4:30. Actually if no one is there overnight...perhaps it's you that should have them sign a waiver. |
are you sure that they don't have someone stay there with them? At my vet they have someone who stays the night if there are animals who are needing to be watched. If I remember correctly when my mom had her Rott spayed she had to stay the night, when I had Duke neutered I was able to pick him up later that day. Not sure if the process is different for boys... |

Patti, you're not being unreasonable! She is your baby! I would never leave my baby at a vet overnight unless they were staffed 24/7. I would opt to have them at an emergency fully staffed clinic over having them stay unattended! |
