Lazy Ear on Yorkie Puppy I took P.J. to the groomer yesterday for his yorkie clip. When I picked him up, they said he has a lazy ear. They used to stand up straight and now one is folding over at the tip. I don't understand because they were not that way yesterday. I talked with my breeder and she suggested increasing her Nutrical and adding calcium supplements and possibly retaping it for a couple of days. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Thank you in advance for your help. |
1 Attachment(s) That happened to me. One day one of his ears were flopping. The next day they both were down. Coincidentally I had an appointment with him for the next day and I asked him about his ears. He did tell me that i could give him more calcium but he said that happends when they start growing new teeth. I did tape his ears for a bit. They're nice and pointing straight up. I do have some pic's of his ears taped up but unfortunately I do not know how to post them up. let me give it a try and see if i can post something up. |
Thank you very much for your reply. So far, I have increased his Nutrical. I will buy some calcium supplements tomorrow. I am glad to hear that your yorkie's ears are now standing straight. That gives me a lot of hope. About the pictures, don't feel bad, I haven't figured how to post mine either. Thanks again. |
Lazy Ears I have an 8 mo. yorkie named Fancy Pants. Her ears have been up, down, up, down and now are up and have been for a while. I didn't do anything - no taping or shaving. The vet said that while they are teething the ears will go up and down. I'm sure hers are going to stay up permanently. Hope this helps a little. |
Thank you for your response. I appreciate the advice that both of you have given me. I am glad to hear that your yorkie's ears are now standing up. I guess I hit the panic button a little to soon. Thank you again. |
I have heard that if the hair is too long and thick on the ear, it will cause it to go down. I am a new mommy so that is not something I have heard of giving calcium and nutrical for the ears. Has your puppy been displaying any other symptoms of fatigue? Have you looked at her gums? They should be nice and pink. Are we supposed to give supplements? I just give Tinkie high quality food. Good luck and post what you find out! Annie and Tinkie |
P.J. was perfectly fine the day before. His ears were erect the night before he went to the groomers. So I was shocked when the groomer came out and told me that. He was tired when he came back home and slept for a while. Today, his ear is still a little floppy, but he can hold it up. He is still very playful, gum color is pink, and his CRT (Capillary Refill Time) is normal. I am going to try the supplements tomorrow and possibly tape them if it becomes worse. Thank you all again for your advice and I will keep you posted. |
Rambo's mama, your babie look so much like my Gucci. Regarding the lazy ears, Gucci haven't had any problems. Her ears are up and she is teething; so i guess it depends on the pup. |
Hi, quick question: what is his eating schedule? Do you have food available all the time or only at certain times? Thanks, Annie and Tinkie |

Hi, Is calcium something I should be giving my puppy all the time? Is this something they need? Nobody told me that I should give my puppy anything but food. |
If you feed your dog their recommended kibble, I'm sure it has all of the needed nutrients your dog requires. I have heard that when Yorkies are teething or are not feeling well, their ears drop. I have witnessed that with Otis. His ears dropped some when he was a puppy, but now they're up. Maybe your dog was a little shocked and out of sync because he just had a long day at the groomers, therefore his ears are down. Just an idea. |
In response to Baby Girl Yorkie, P.J. has food available to him all the time. I give him the Nutrical at bedtime so his blood sugar level will not drop during the night. He really looks forward to it. His ears will perk up then. :) I also send the Nutrical to the groomers because I know that he really isn't going to eat and drink properly while he is there. Thank you MM yorkies for the cottage cheese/yogurt advice. I think I will try that and see how he does with it. Has it caused any intestinal upset in your babies? Like June Bug stated, I also wondered if this visit was a little stressful on him. My hubby accidentally took him to a different groomer. She did a good job, but maybe the change was a bit much for him. I would like to once again thank all of your for your replies. I am new to this forum and you have all made me "feel at home" here. I guess we will just have to wait and see what his ears will do. I love him regardless. |
yea, Gucci and Rambo did look a like but that was taken 3 months back. His hair is much lighter now and a bit longer. |
I've read that the ears will go up and down while they're teething altho occasionally I've seen some that flop later in life and never stand back up.. but at his age I would say teething. I live in Georgia too! |
