will not walk on leash! We just got our yorkie Friday, so maybe this is too soon for this, but he will not walk on his leash!!! He just sits and pulls the other way, or bites it. What can I do to get him to walk? |
Well I had the same problem with Riley. He never had a problem with his collar, so while we were at home, I would attach his leash and just let him get use to having it on. He would just walk around with it dragging the ground. I would keep a good eye on him because I didn't want him getting it caught on something. Then eventually I started picking it up and walking him around the house. Now he walks fine outside on it.:) |
Congratulations on your new puppy. How old is he? Joey didn't like it at first, didn't like the grass at first either, but I just took him out a little each day, and he grew to love his walks. Make sure your using a harness type of collar so that you won't hurt the trachea. After his "walk" you could give him a little treat. |
he is almost 14 weeks. I tried leaving it on him, but he just freezes. :eek: |
Good luck with your new Yorkie. When mine was new he did the same thing you are describing. In fact, my husband called him a "pull toy" because he would not move forward unless dragged. Of course, we use a harness and we would never drag him on the sidewalk or outside. The advice here from the members is excellent. Using the attached leash around the house method really works, but remember to always supervise this activity. When the pup has all his shots you should enroll in puppy class. You will find this great fun and there will be an instructor there who can really help with walking. Enjoy your new baby! |

If he freaks or refuses to walk around the house on it, give it to him just to sniff and get use to. Just don't let him chew it up. Lol. Does anyone know how to get Riley to stop trying to run while hes on the leash? |
Not sure if this will work for you or not, but when it came close to being warm enough to take Maggy May outside o her harness, I put her harness and leash on her in the house daily for a while (while I was RIGHT THERE supervising) and just let her walk around dragging her leash behind her. It got her used to having it on her and when it came time to take her outside about a week later, she walked just fine. It takes them some time to get used to it. |
I still haven't gotten Roxie of Pixie comfortable walking on a leash since I don't walk then very much, but if you keep trying everyday he will get use ot it and love it. Last week I put the harnesses and leashes on all of them and took them in the back yard and let them walk around. Roxie started walking around after a few minutes so it just takes time and persistance. |
I leashed trained mine by putting a leash on them in the house to first get them used to it. Neither of mine liked it at first. Are you using a leash on a collar or harness? It's best to use a harness or harness vest since yorkies have delicate tracheas. Your little guy sounds like my Jake. The first time I put a leash on him, he sat there like he couldn't move. And, the look he gave me was priceless lol. Just keep encouraging him, he will get used to it. Have some training treats with you and reward him when he walks with you. Once my guys started associating the leash with going outside, they didn't mind a leash at all! In fact, if they see me get their leashes, they get excited because they know they are going outside. They hop right up in my lap and get their leashes on lol. Good luck, it just takes time and patience.:) Everything is all new to him right now. |
