Hev you ever had to medicate your baby? Have you ever medicated your baby? As in like anti-depressants or tranquilizers? I have Ben, Barney, and Tia.....Barney is my extrovert...Does not know a stranger, loves everyone.....Tia is following in his footsteps....Now Bennie is my introvert...He is scared of his own shadow....He is terrified of people....He was really "shy" when we went to meet him and Barney when they were pups....We went ahead and got Barney....3 weeks later we went back and got Ben.....He shook all the way home and threw up constantly....Just chalked it up to nerves.....Of course, any car trip, he gets sick....Once every blue moon, I think he is starting to come out of his shell...But he goes right back into it...He "adores" my granddaughter-Brooklyn...But that is it....No one else...Everyone tries to get him to come to them.....But no such luck....I am beginning to think he doesn't even like me anymore.....I am at a loss on what to do....4 weeks ago, he went to the groomers and got his first professional grooming.....He has had nothing to do with me ever since....When I take them out back to potty....I have to chase him to pick him up and bring him in the house.....Once, I just left him out there thinking he would realize....Still would not come in.....And it is in the 90's here...I can't just "leave" him out there. I am at a loss as what to do....Mark thinks we need to find him a home that he feels secure in....I do not know what to do...I want what is best for him.... I have taken him to the vet and he checked out just find....The vet said he is just an introvert.....I asked for meds...But he wasn't comfortable with that idea.... I do not know what to do...As we speak, he is in the laundry room....His choice not mine..... Any suggestions? Joyce |
That's a really sad story. Perhaps he is a one dog only kinda guy. He may thrive in a household with him as the only pup. I don't know what else to say to you. I feel for you, really. It must be awful to want to play and squeese him and know he's not happy with that. Being so shy maybe he dosen't want the competion and just a family to his own who loves just him. Good luck with whatever you deceide. |
When Frimousse came to my home , she was afraid of everything . If she heard a noise or see a person she went under the bed . It wasn't really funny to see her like that . It took her about 3 months just to come see at the bedroom's door . Everytime , I saw her there , I gave her treats . Later , she came in the living room . Gradually , I encouraged her to look at what was happening in the house . I tell you right now , if you decided to invest in him , It won't be easy , you'll be discouraged from time to time but what a joy you'll have when he'll start to come out of his shell . The secret is love , attention and patience , patience and again patience . After all the time and patience I placed on Frimousse , every little thing make me extremely proud and happy to see her as she is now . |

Maybe try playing with him one on one, with out your other dogs. Take him for walks by himself, to petsmart by himself, and other outings just him. Some dogs are naturally more shy, but he seems like he is really depressed. I hope you can find a way to make him happier! |
Have you read any of Ceasar Millan's books? I haven't really read any but I do watch the show from time to time. I know one of his big theories is that people tend to "nurture" this timid behavior, which therefore encourages it. Have you tried to ignore his timid behavior, and positively reinforce his outgoing behavior? Just a thought... good luck! |
i'm no dog expert at all, but i was thinking maybe he needs more one on one time with you also. just until he gets comfortable since he's not as outgoing as the others. and maybe you can coax him with treats too! ;) i hope it all works out for ya! keep trying |
I certainly don't think medication is the answer. Training is. A well trained dog gains confidance and won't be quite a shy. But you need to use positive reinforcement. Just a suggestion. You used an example of letting them out to gp potty and he wouldn't come back in. How about using a leash when you take him out then that wouldn't be a problem. |
Thank you all for the suggestions...I really appreciate them... Joyce |
